Course overview
Higher education communications teams are expected to protect institutional reputation while helping recruitment teams meet enrolment targets in an environment shaped by declining demographics, fee scrutiny, rankings, student reviews, social media incidents and intense competition for domestic and international applicants. Effective public relations cannot operate separately from student recruitment: media coverage, academic expertise, campus experience, parent confidence, offer-holder communications and crisis response all influence whether prospective students apply, accept and enrol. This course equips participants to connect reputation-building activity with measurable recruitment outcomes without reducing communications to advertising.
Participants learn how to build a higher education PR and recruitment communications plan from audience insight, institutional priorities and enrolment data. They develop student and parent personas, map decision journeys, identify newsworthy academic and student stories, write media materials, plan thought-leadership campaigns and manage issues that could affect applicant confidence. The course also covers channel selection, social listening, enquiry and conversion communications, ambassador programmes, media relations, message governance, crisis holding statements and campaign measurement using recruitment and communications KPIs.
Delivery combines instructor-led analysis with practical workshops based on university, college and pathway-provider scenarios. Participants critique real-style prospectus messages, press releases, social posts, offer-holder emails and crisis responses; use data to make channel and message decisions; and receive structured feedback from the facilitator and peers. Each participant leaves with a recruitment-focused PR communications plan, including stakeholder map, message architecture, campaign calendar, media pitch, issues-response framework and measurement dashboard outline ready to adapt for their institution.
The course is designed for communications, marketing, recruitment and admissions professionals who already work with prospective students or institutional stakeholders and need a more joined-up approach to reputation, reach, conversion and enrolment.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in a higher education communications, marketing, admissions, recruitment or stakeholder-engagement role, and understand their institution’s basic recruitment cycle from enquiry through enrolment. Familiarity with core terms such as target audience, campaign, conversion, media release, CRM and KPI is assumed. Participants should be able to review simple spreadsheet data and bring examples of current recruitment communications, where permitted. No journalism qualification, design software expertise, paid-media buying experience or advanced data-analysis capability is required. The course teaches the planning frameworks and measurement approach needed to use these functions more effectively.
Training methodology
The facilitator uses short expert-led briefings to introduce higher education recruitment models, PR methods and governance decisions, followed by applied work on realistic institutional scenarios. Participants analyse applicant data, student-review themes and media coverage; build personas and journey maps; write media and offer-holder communications; and test campaign choices in small groups. Case discussions cover reputational issues affecting applicants, parents, academics and leadership. Daily feedback strengthens each participant’s work, culminating in a structured application-planning session that turns the course outputs into an implementable institutional plan.
