Course overview
Social teams often have access to large volumes of mentions, comments, direct messages and competitor activity, yet still struggle to distinguish a service issue from a passing complaint, an emerging trend from background noise, or a useful sales signal from irrelevant conversation. This course helps marketing and customer experience professionals build a disciplined Hootsuite monitoring practice: one that captures the right conversations, routes them to the right people and turns social data into defensible business decisions. It addresses the operational gap between simply watching social channels and actively using them to protect reputation, improve response and identify demand.
Participants configure Hootsuite Streams and Hootsuite Listening searches around brand names, products, campaigns, executives, competitors, locations and industry terms. They learn Boolean query construction, keyword exclusions, sentiment review, source evaluation, message triage, escalation rules and competitor benchmarking. The course also covers Hootsuite Analytics reporting, tagging structures, response-time measures, share-of-voice indicators and practical methods for separating actionable insight from vanity metrics. Participants practise translating monitoring findings into concise recommendations for marketing, customer service, sales and leadership teams.
Delivery combines instructor demonstrations in Hootsuite with guided configuration labs, realistic customer-service and reputation scenarios, peer review of search logic and reporting workshops. Each participant develops a working monitoring blueprint for their organisation or a supplied case company, including query sets, Stream layouts, a triage workflow, alert thresholds, a tagging taxonomy and a weekly insight-report template. This deliverable can be refined and implemented immediately after the course, giving managers a clear starting point for a more consistent social listening operation.
The course is suited to professionals who already manage social media activity and need to make monitoring more systematic, measurable and connected to commercial or customer-experience decisions.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Configure Hootsuite Streams to monitor priority profiles, lists, keywords, hashtags and engagement activity
- Build Boolean search queries with operators, exclusions and language variants for Hootsuite Listening
- Create a social monitoring taxonomy that tags mentions by issue, sentiment, customer stage and escalation priority
- Evaluate social mentions for relevance, source credibility, urgency and business impact
- Design a triage and escalation workflow for complaints, reputation risks, sales opportunities and influencer contacts
- Benchmark competitor conversation volume, themes, engagement patterns and share-of-voice indicators
- Produce a Hootsuite Analytics report that connects monitoring data to campaign, service and reputation objectives
- Present a social listening action plan containing query logic, alert rules, ownership and reporting cadence

- Brand and Communications Managers — who monitor reputation, competitor narratives and potential communications issues
- Sales Enablement or Social Selling Leads — who want to identify buyer signals, prospect discussions and industry demand themes
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable using social platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X or YouTube in a business context and should understand basic concepts including posts, mentions, hashtags, comments, direct messages, engagement and campaign objectives. Prior experience scheduling content or reviewing platform analytics is useful, but advanced data analysis is not required. Participants should ideally have access to an organisation’s Hootsuite account or a suitable training workspace; availability of Hootsuite Listening depends on the organisation’s subscription. No coding, API development, paid-media expertise or prior Boolean-search experience is required, as query logic is taught from first principles.
Training methodology
The instructor uses live Hootsuite demonstrations to show how monitoring configurations behave in practice, then participants build equivalent setups in guided labs. Case exercises use simulated complaint spikes, competitor launches, campaign reactions and sales-signal conversations to test search quality, tagging and escalation decisions. Small groups audit one another’s Boolean queries and reporting assumptions, exposing blind spots and irrelevant results. Each day closes with a practical output, and the final workshop converts these outputs into an implementation plan with named owners, review intervals and reporting audiences.
