Course overview
Hospitals face rising utility costs, clinical waste volumes, carbon-reporting expectations, community health inequities, and scrutiny of supply-chain practices. Sustainability leaders must reduce environmental impacts without compromising infection prevention, patient safety, clinical availability, or regulatory compliance. This course equips participants to convert broad environmental, social and governance commitments into hospital-specific programmes with measurable baselines, accountable owners, realistic capital requirements, and evidence suitable for executive boards, regulators, funders, and community stakeholders.
Participants learn to map material sustainability issues across estates, clinical operations, procurement, workforce, patient access, and community health. They calculate and prioritise emissions using the GHG Protocol, establish energy, water, waste, and anaesthetic-gas indicators, assess healthcare waste streams, and identify carbon and social-impact hotspots in purchased goods and services. The course also covers social value, health equity, stakeholder engagement, sustainability reporting using GRI Standards, governance structures, business cases, and practical dashboards for monitoring hospital performance.
Instruction combines hospital-sector case studies, facilitated data exercises, peer review, and structured workshops. Participants work with sample hospital utility, waste, procurement, and patient-access data to build a materiality assessment, emissions inventory outline, KPI dashboard, and prioritised improvement roadmap. Each participant leaves with a hospital sustainability and social impact action plan that can be adapted for their facility, department, health system, or capital project, including targets, measures, responsibilities, implementation milestones, and an executive reporting format.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience in a hospital, clinic, health system, healthcare facilities function, or healthcare supply chain, and should understand basic operational measures such as energy consumption, waste volumes, budgets, procurement categories, or service performance. Familiarity with Excel tables and simple charts is assumed because participants will work with sample utility, waste, and purchasing data. Prior knowledge of carbon accounting, GRI reporting, Power BI, environmental management systems, or lifecycle assessment is not required; these methods are introduced and applied in a healthcare context. Participants should bring a laptop with spreadsheet capability for the practical exercises.
Training methodology
The course uses instructor-led briefings to establish methods, followed by hospital-specific application workshops. Participants interpret sample electricity, fuel, water, clinical-waste, procurement, and patient-access datasets; map stakeholders and material issues; and compare interventions through cost, carbon, clinical, and social criteria. Case studies examine estates decarbonisation, sustainable theatres, waste segregation, low-carbon procurement, and community-health partnerships. Small-group reviews challenge assumptions and refine proposed actions. The final session is an implementation-planning clinic in which each participant prepares an executive-ready roadmap for their own organisation.

Day 1: Hospital sustainability context and material priorities
- Healthcare sustainability drivers: regulation, funder expectations, patient safety, and net-zero commitments
- Environmental, social, and governance responsibilities across hospital operations
- Hospital value-chain mapping from estates and clinical services to suppliers and communities
- Materiality assessment design using impact, financial, stakeholder, and health-equity criteria
- Stakeholder mapping for clinicians, patients, estates teams, suppliers, regulators, and local communities
- Sustainability governance roles, committee structures, escalation routes, and board oversight
- Baseline data architecture for utilities, waste, procurement, workforce, and access indicators
Workshop: Participants complete a materiality and stakeholder map for a fictional acute hospital and produce a ranked list of priority issues.
Day 2: Environmental performance measurement in healthcare
- GHG Protocol Corporate Standard boundaries and organisational consolidation approaches
- Scope 1 emissions from boilers, fleet, refrigerants, and anaesthetic gases
- Scope 2 electricity reporting and renewable energy procurement considerations
- Priority Scope 3 categories for pharmaceuticals, medical devices, food, construction, and waste
- Energy Star Portfolio Manager benchmarking for hospital energy performance
- Water balance analysis, leak detection indicators, and resilience metrics
- Healthcare waste-stream classification, segregation performance, and waste-hierarchy controls

Day 3: Sustainable clinical operations, estates, and procurement
- Lifecycle cost analysis for energy-efficiency and low-carbon estates investments
- Operating theatre sustainability: single-use items, packs, HVAC, and anaesthetic-gas reduction
- Infection prevention and control constraints in sustainability interventions
- Sustainable procurement specifications for medical devices, pharmaceuticals, food, and facilities services
- Supplier engagement questionnaires for carbon, labour practices, traceability, and packaging
- Embodied-carbon evaluation for refurbishment, new-build, and equipment replacement decisions
- Climate adaptation planning for heat, flooding, power disruption, and supply shortages
Workshop: Teams prepare a procurement and estates intervention proposal for a hospital theatre refurbishment, including lifecycle-cost and risk assumptions.
Day 4: Social impact, equity, and credible reporting
