Course overview

Marketing and digital experience teams often know that a landing page, checkout or lead form is underperforming, but cannot see why. Web analytics may show a high exit rate or abandoned funnel step without revealing whether visitors are missing key content, hesitating over pricing, encountering a form error or being distracted by an interface element. This course equips participants to use Hotjar evidence responsibly to investigate those questions and turn behavioural observations into prioritised conversion and customer-experience improvements.

Participants learn to configure Hotjar for meaningful analysis, including heatmaps, session recordings, surveys, feedback widgets and funnel analysis. They practise defining research questions, selecting pages and user segments, setting appropriate filters, interpreting click, scroll and rage-click signals, and separating repeatable patterns from anecdotal observations. The course also connects Hotjar findings with GA4 metrics and Google Tag Manager events, enabling participants to investigate specific drop-off points and assess whether a proposed page change addresses an evidenced user problem.

Teaching combines instructor demonstrations, guided analysis labs, team critique of real-world conversion scenarios and practical configuration workshops. Participants work through a structured evidence-to-action process: frame a question, collect Hotjar data, identify a behavioural pattern, validate it with quantitative context, and recommend a test or design change. They leave with a completed Hotjar measurement and insight plan for a selected website journey, including tagging requirements, recording and heatmap settings, survey questions, an evidence log and a prioritised optimisation backlog.

The course is suited to professionals responsible for acquisition journeys, conversion rate optimisation, content performance, digital products and customer experience. It is equally useful for managers who need their teams to make website changes on observed customer behaviour rather than stakeholder opinion alone.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Configure Hotjar heatmaps, recordings, surveys and feedback widgets for defined website research questions
  • Create page, device, traffic-source and event-based filters to isolate relevant visitor behaviour
  • Interpret click maps, scroll maps, move maps and rage-click signals without overclaiming causation
  • Analyse session recordings using a structured observation log and repeat-pattern coding method
  • Build Hotjar Funnels to investigate abandonment across lead-generation, ecommerce or account journeys
  • Design on-page survey and feedback questions that capture actionable visitor intent and friction
  • Triangulate Hotjar findings with GA4 reports and Google Tag Manager event data
  • Produce a prioritised conversion insight backlog with evidence, hypotheses, owners and proposed tests

Who should attend

  • Digital Marketing Managers — who need defensible evidence for landing-page and campaign-journey improvements
  • Conversion Rate Optimisation Specialists — who investigate friction and prioritise experiment hypotheses
  • UX Researchers — who need rapid behavioural evidence to complement interviews and usability testing
  • Product Managers — who own web journeys and need to identify where customers fail to complete key tasks
  • Ecommerce Managers — who must reduce product-page, basket and checkout abandonment
  • Web Content Managers — who need to assess whether visitors find, understand and act on page content

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable navigating websites, reading basic marketing metrics such as sessions, conversion rate, bounce or engagement rate, and discussing a customer journey such as a lead form or checkout. Familiarity with GA4, Google Tag Manager or Hotjar is helpful but not required. A complete beginner can attend and should expect guided setup and interpretation exercises before progressing to analysis. Participants need access to a laptop and, where possible, a non-production or authorised Hotjar workspace; no coding, SQL, statistics qualification or prior UX research training is required.

Training methodology

Each day combines short instructor-led demonstrations with guided work in Hotjar and companion analytics tools. Participants configure features against a realistic lead-generation or ecommerce journey, then analyse curated heatmaps, recordings, funnel steps and visitor responses using evidence templates. Small groups compare interpretations, challenge unsupported conclusions and prepare recommendations for a stakeholder review. Case studies show how teams distinguish usability friction from expected browsing behaviour. The final day includes an application-planning workshop in which each participant assembles a Hotjar measurement, analysis and optimisation plan for their own website context.

Course outline

Day 1: Hotjar foundations and behavioural research design

  • Hotjar product areas: Observe, Ask and Engage
  • Behavioural analytics versus web analytics
  • Website journey mapping for research priorities
  • Research question and success-criteria definition
  • Hotjar site installation and verification checks
  • Privacy settings, consent considerations and data suppression
  • Hotjar workspace structure, permissions and naming conventions

Workshop: Participants map a priority website journey and produce a Hotjar research brief with questions, audiences, pages and decision criteria.

Day 2: Heatmaps and session recordings

  • Heatmap collection settings and page targeting
  • Click maps, move maps and scroll maps
  • Desktop, tablet and mobile behaviour comparison
  • Interpreting dead clicks, rage clicks and u-turns
  • Session recording sampling and capture controls
  • Recording filters for URL, device, referrer and user attributes
  • Structured observation logs and repeat-pattern coding

Workshop: Participants analyse a heatmap and recording set, then produce an evidence log identifying three repeatable sources of visitor friction.

Day 3: Funnels, segmentation and quantitative context

  • Hotjar Funnels configuration and step logic
  • Diagnosing drop-off between journey stages
  • Segment creation using behaviour and user attributes
  • URL, event and custom-property filtering
  • Google Tag Manager events for behavioural analysis
  • GA4 exploration reports for conversion context
  • Triangulating qualitative and quantitative evidence

Workshop: Participants build a funnel investigation for a simulated checkout or lead form and produce a segmented abandonment diagnosis.

Day 4: Voice of customer and insight synthesis

  • On-page survey timing and trigger selection
  • Open-text, multiple-choice and rating question design
  • Feedback widget configuration and page-level prompts
  • Recruiting usability-test participants with Hotjar Engage
  • Coding survey responses into themes
  • Combining voice-of-customer data with recordings
  • Evidence strength, bias and limitations in interpretation

Workshop: Participants design a page survey and feedback workflow, then synthesise sample responses into a validated friction theme.

Day 5: From Hotjar evidence to optimisation action

  • Writing testable conversion and usability hypotheses
  • Prioritisation using impact, confidence and effort scoring
  • Recommendation formats for design and development teams
  • A/B test briefs and non-test implementation decisions

Frequently asked questions

No. The course starts with workspace setup, research planning and the purpose of each Hotjar feature before moving into analysis. Experience with website reporting or conversion metrics is useful, but guided exercises support participants who are new to Hotjar.

Access to an authorised Hotjar workspace is useful for applying the methods directly, but it is not essential for attendance. The instructor can use training scenarios and sample datasets where access cannot be provided; participants should never use customer data without organisational approval.

Bring a laptop with a current web browser and access to any approved Hotjar, GA4 and Google Tag Manager accounts relevant to your role. No specialist software or coding environment is required, although spreadsheet access is helpful for the evidence-log exercises.

It is designed for marketing, CRO, ecommerce, UX, product and web-content professionals who influence website journeys. It is particularly relevant when a team has traffic and analytics data but lacks clear evidence about visitor behaviour on key pages.

GA4 courses focus primarily on aggregated traffic, events and conversion reporting. This course uses Hotjar to investigate the human behaviour behind those metrics through recordings, heatmaps, funnels and direct visitor feedback, then connects the evidence back to GA4.

You will be able to frame a website research question, configure relevant Hotjar collection and filtering, and document behavioural evidence in a consistent format. You will also leave with a measurement and insight plan, survey approach and prioritised backlog that can be adapted to an active business journey.
