Course overview
HR officers are often asked to turn employment law, management decisions and operational practice into policies that managers can apply consistently. Weakly structured policies create avoidable grievances, inconsistent disciplinary decisions, privacy breaches, unclear leave administration and outdated documents circulating across the business. This course equips HR officers to manage the full policy lifecycle: identifying the need for a policy, drafting enforceable wording, securing review and approval, communicating requirements, monitoring use and controlling revisions.
Participants examine the architecture of an effective HR policy suite, including policy hierarchies, mandatory clauses, definitions, roles, exceptions, approval authorities and document-control rules. They learn to convert legal and organisational requirements into clear policy statements, procedures and manager guidance without copying legislation into unusable documents. Practical modules cover policy gap analysis, risk assessment, consultation planning, equality and inclusion checks, employee-data considerations, grievance and disciplinary interfaces, version control, policy registers and implementation metrics.
The programme is delivered through instructor-led analysis, drafting workshops, peer review panels and case studies involving leave, flexible work, conduct, remote work and employee records. Participants work from a policy-management toolkit using Microsoft Word, Excel and SharePoint controls. They leave with a completed HR Policy Management Plan, a policy inventory and gap-analysis template, a policy drafting checklist, an approval workflow and a 90-day implementation plan that can be adapted to their organisation.
This course is designed for HR officers who already support employee relations or HR operations and now need to own, improve or govern policies across a business unit or organisation. It is equally valuable for managers approving the training because it creates more reliable policy controls, clearer accountability and an auditable route from policy decision to workplace practice.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Conduct a policy inventory and gap analysis against organisational, legal and operational requirements
- Draft HR policy clauses using defined scope, obligations, roles, exceptions and escalation routes
- Build a policy hierarchy that distinguishes policy, procedure, guidance, forms and manager tools
- Apply a policy risk-assessment matrix to prioritise high-exposure policy reviews
- Create a stakeholder consultation and approval workflow using a RACI matrix
- Establish document-control rules for policy ownership, version numbering, review dates and archival records
- Evaluate draft policies for fairness, accessibility, privacy and consistent employee-relations application
- Produce a 90-day HR policy implementation plan with communication, training and compliance measures
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build a portfolio-ready HR Policy Management Plan that demonstrates governance capability to senior HR leaders
- Gain confidence challenging ambiguous policy wording before it creates employee-relations risk
- Develop a repeatable method for leading policy reviews rather than relying on inherited templates
- Strengthen credibility in consultations with legal, payroll, IT, managers and employee representatives
- Prepare for broader HR advisory, employee-relations or HR compliance responsibilities
For your organisation
- Reduce inconsistent manager decisions by standardising policy wording, procedures and escalation points
- Create an auditable policy register showing owners, approvals, versions, review dates and outstanding actions
- Identify high-risk policy gaps before they result in grievances, privacy incidents or compliance failures
- Shorten policy update cycles through defined consultation, approval and publication workflows
- Improve policy adoption through targeted manager guidance, employee communications and implementation measures
Target competencies
Who should attend
- HR Officers — who draft, maintain or administer people policies and need defensible control processes
- HR Advisors — who interpret policies for managers and require consistent escalation and exception routes
- Employee Relations Officers — who need policies that support fair grievance, conduct and disciplinary decisions
- HR Operations Officers — who manage policy records, employee communications and recurring process administration
- HR Compliance Officers — who must evidence policy governance, review status and regulatory alignment
- People and Culture Coordinators — who support policy roll-outs and need practical drafting and consultation methods
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have at least one year of HR administration, HR advisory, employee-relations or HR operations experience and be familiar with core employment concepts such as contracts, leave, conduct, grievances, disciplinary action, equality and employee records. They should be able to read existing HR policies and use Microsoft Word and Excel for document editing and basic tables. Access to their organisation’s policy templates or policy register is helpful but not essential. Legal qualification, specialist employment-law training, SharePoint administration expertise and prior policy-authoring experience are not required.
Training methodology
The course combines focused instructor-led teaching with policy-lab work using realistic HR documents. Participants analyse flawed policies, map a policy suite, score risks in a review matrix and redraft clauses for clarity, fairness and operational usability. Small-group review panels simulate consultation with HR, legal, managers and employee representatives. Case studies test how policies operate in leave, conduct, flexible-working and employee-data scenarios. Each participant progressively builds an organisation-specific policy-management pack and finishes by presenting a prioritised 90-day application plan for instructor and peer feedback.
