Course overview
Healthcare facilities face HSE risks that differ sharply from those in general industry: sharps injuries, bloodborne pathogen exposure, hazardous-drug handling, healthcare waste, oxygen systems, patient-facing evacuation, laboratory chemicals, and contractor activity in live clinical areas. HSE managers and clinical leaders must control these risks without disrupting patient care, while producing evidence that stands up to regulatory inspection, accreditation review, and internal governance. This course addresses the practical challenge of translating HSE requirements into workable controls for hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and outpatient facilities.
Participants learn to build and operate an integrated HSE management system for healthcare settings. The course covers ISO 45001 and ISO 14001-aligned management processes; healthcare-specific hazard identification; risk assessment using risk matrices and bow-tie analysis; incident investigation; exposure control; waste segregation; emergency preparedness; contractor control; and compliance auditing. Participants practise setting measurable objectives, defining operational controls, assigning responsibilities, reviewing performance data, and escalating significant risks through a clear governance structure.
Instruction combines facilitated technical sessions with healthcare case studies, document reviews, group risk workshops, and practical planning exercises. Participants work with realistic scenarios including a needlestick injury, cytotoxic waste non-conformance, oxygen-related fire risk, and an evacuation challenge involving dependent patients. They leave with a healthcare HSE management implementation pack containing a risk register, inspection checklist, incident investigation template, audit plan, performance dashboard measures, and a 90-day action plan adapted to their own facility.
The course is designed for professionals who already work with safety, facilities, clinical operations, environmental services, quality, or compliance and need to coordinate HSE controls across complex care environments.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in a healthcare facility, laboratory, clinic, or health-related support service and a working understanding of basic workplace safety concepts such as hazards, controls, incident reporting, PPE, and risk assessment. Familiarity with local occupational safety, environmental, healthcare waste, fire safety, or infection-control requirements is helpful. Participants should be comfortable reading procedures and working with simple spreadsheet tables. No prior certification in ISO 45001 or ISO 14001, auditing qualification, specialist engineering knowledge, or advanced environmental science background is required. This is not a beginner course in general workplace safety.
Training methodology
The course is delivered through instructor-led briefings, guided analysis of healthcare regulations and standards, and practical workshops using facility-based scenarios. Participants review sample policies, inspection records, incident reports, waste manifests, and audit findings, then identify weaknesses and design corrective controls. Small groups complete risk assessments for clinical and support-service activities, practise incident investigation interviews, and build audit checklists. Each participant applies the methods to a selected area of their own facility and completes an end-of-course 90-day HSE implementation plan.

Workshop: Participants map their facility's HSE governance structure and produce a gap list covering accountability, documentation, and review arrangements.
Day 2: Healthcare hazard identification and risk control

- Bow-tie analysis for high-consequence healthcare events
- Hierarchy of controls for clinical and facilities hazards

Day 3: Environmental controls and emergency preparedness

Workshop: Participants develop a waste-control and emergency-response worksheet for a ward, laboratory, or outpatient department, including escalation routes and inspection points.
Day 4: Incident learning, assurance, and performance measurement
