Course overview
Warehouses, distribution centres and transport interfaces combine high-throughput operations with significant HSE exposure: forklift and pedestrian interaction, racking collapse, manual handling, loading-bay activity, battery charging, hazardous materials, waste, noise and contractor work. HSE leaders must control these risks without disrupting fulfilment targets, while producing evidence that stands up to incident investigations, customer audits, regulator visits and ISO management-system reviews. This course addresses the practical gap between generic safety procedures and the controls needed on a live logistics site.
Participants learn to build and operate an integrated HSE management approach for warehousing and logistics. They apply task-based risk assessment, hierarchy-of-controls decisions, traffic-management planning, contractor control, incident investigation, emergency preparedness and environmental-aspect evaluation. The programme also covers legal compliance registers, leading and lagging performance indicators, corrective-action governance, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 alignment, and methods for engaging supervisors, agency workers and third-party carriers in consistent safe-working practices.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with realistic distribution-centre scenarios, document reviews and facilitated workshops. Participants work with practical templates including risk registers, inspection checklists, incident investigation forms, traffic-management plans and action trackers. By the end of the week, each participant leaves with a site-specific HSE improvement plan and a management-ready control dashboard that can be adapted for their own warehouse, hub, cross-dock or transport operation.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in a warehouse, distribution, fleet, facilities or HSE role and be familiar with basic workplace risk assessment terminology, including hazards, controls, likelihood, consequence and corrective actions. Familiarity with routine warehouse operations such as forklift use, racking, loading bays, manual handling and contractor access is assumed. Participants should also be comfortable reviewing policies, checklists and simple spreadsheet data. Prior ISO 45001 or ISO 14001 auditor training is not required, and no specialist software expertise is needed. The course explains the standards in operational terms rather than assuming certification-auditor knowledge.
Training methodology
The programme uses instructor-led briefings to establish the control framework, followed by hands-on application to warehouse scenarios. Participants assess a forklift-pedestrian near miss, review a loading-bay risk assessment, map vehicle routes, test incident causation using 5 Whys and build an Excel KPI dashboard. Small groups compare control decisions for racking, battery charging, contractors and environmental incidents, then defend their recommendations in management-review simulations. The final workshop converts learning into a 90-day site improvement plan with named owners, assurance checks and escalation triggers.
