Course overview

Global mobility managers operate where employment law, tax exposure, immigration permissions, compensation, employee experience and business continuity meet. A delayed visa, inconsistent allowance decision or poorly documented assignment can interrupt a critical project and create avoidable cost. This course helps mobility professionals design and administer cross-border moves with clearer governance, stronger controls and defensible decisions across assignments, transfers, relocations and repatriations.

Participants examine the full international assignment lifecycle: workforce planning, assignment policy design, host-country employment considerations, immigration workflow, tax equalisation, social security coordination, payroll interfaces, benefits, family support, duty of care and return planning. They learn to segment mobile populations, select appropriate mobility models, build cost projections, manage vendors, maintain compliant case records and communicate decisions to employees, line managers, finance, payroll and legal stakeholders.

Teaching combines instructor-led technical sessions with mobility case files, policy workshops, cost-calculation exercises and cross-functional decision simulations. Participants work with an assignment-policy template, mobility case tracker, RACI matrix, compliance risk register and international assignment cost model. They leave with a practical Global Mobility Operating Pack tailored to a selected mobility scenario, including workflow controls, stakeholder responsibilities, escalation rules and implementation priorities.

The course is designed for practitioners who already support employee mobility or international HR operations and now need to manage more complex cross-border cases. It also gives managers approving training a structured way to strengthen policy consistency, control assignment cost and reduce operational dependency on external advisers.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Map an end-to-end global mobility workflow from business request through repatriation using defined control points
  • Segment mobile employees and select suitable assignment, transfer, commuter, remote-work or business-travel arrangements
  • Draft policy provisions for allowances, housing, schooling, relocation support, hardship and repatriation
  • Build an international assignment cost estimate using balance-sheet components, tax assumptions and vendor costs
  • Apply a compliance risk register to immigration, tax, social security, payroll and employment-law dependencies
  • Create a RACI matrix for HR, payroll, finance, tax, legal, line management and relocation vendors
  • Evaluate mobility vendors using service-level measures, data requirements and escalation criteria
  • Produce a Global Mobility Operating Pack containing case workflows, templates, controls and implementation actions

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Gain a repeatable framework for advising leaders on the right mobility arrangement rather than treating every move as a standard expatriate assignment
  • Build confidence in challenging incomplete business requests before they create immigration, payroll or tax problems
  • Develop evidence-based cost estimates that support credible discussions with finance and budget holders
  • Strengthen cross-functional credibility by using shared workflows, ownership matrices and escalation language
  • Leave with portfolio-ready mobility governance artefacts that demonstrate capability for senior international HR roles

For your organisation

  • Reduces missed hand-offs between HR, immigration, tax, payroll and relocation providers through documented case workflows
  • Improves consistency in assignment allowances, approvals and exceptions across business units and destinations
  • Controls mobility spend through earlier cost modelling, clearer policy application and vendor-performance monitoring
  • Lowers compliance exposure by identifying immigration, tax, social security and employment-law dependencies before deployment
  • Creates reusable operating documents that reduce reliance on individual knowledge and accelerate case onboarding

Who should attend

  • Global Mobility Managers — who own cross-border assignment delivery, policy application and escalation decisions
  • International HR Managers — who coordinate employment, benefits and employee-relations issues across countries
  • Global Mobility Specialists — who administer assignment cases and need stronger compliance and cost-control methods
  • HR Business Partners — who advise business leaders on the people implications of international deployment decisions
  • International Payroll Managers — who manage payroll interfaces, allowances and shadow-payroll requirements for mobile employees
  • Talent Mobility and Relocation Leads — who manage relocation providers and employee experience during moves

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical exposure to HR operations, employee relocation, international assignments, payroll coordination or HR policy administration. They should understand core HR terms such as employment contract, compensation, benefits, payroll, employee record and manager approval, and be comfortable working with spreadsheets for basic cost inputs. Familiarity with their organisation's assignment policy or relocation process is useful but not essential. No legal qualification, tax certification, immigration accreditation or prior use of Workday or SAP SuccessFactors is required. The course does not teach country-specific legal advice; participants learn how to identify issues and engage qualified advisers.

Training methodology

The instructor uses a single multinational deployment scenario throughout the week, supplemented by short cases involving transfers, remote work and urgent project travel. Participants analyse policy extracts, calculate assignment costs in Excel, triage compliance risks, map system and vendor hand-offs, and negotiate an exception decision in stakeholder groups. Instructor feedback focuses on the practicality of controls and communications, not abstract theory. Each day adds a component to the final Global Mobility Operating Pack, followed on day five by an application plan for the participant's own operating environment.

Frequently asked questions

You should understand basic HR operations and have some exposure to employee moves, payroll, benefits or HR policy administration. You do not need to be a tax, immigration or employment-law specialist; the course focuses on managing the process, risks and adviser interfaces.

A laptop with spreadsheet software is recommended for the assignment cost-model exercise and operating-pack work. Access to your employer's Workday, SAP SuccessFactors or vendor portals is not required, and no live company data should be used.

It is most suitable for global mobility managers, specialists, international HR managers and HR business partners supporting cross-border deployments. It is also relevant to payroll and talent-mobility leads who need to understand their role in the mobility control environment.

This course teaches the operating model for managing mobility cases across policy, cost, vendors, HR systems and internal stakeholders. It identifies when legal or tax advice is needed but does not attempt to provide jurisdiction-specific legal opinions or personal tax calculations.

You can use the intake questionnaire, risk register, RACI matrix, cost-model structure and vendor scorecard on active or upcoming cases. The final implementation roadmap helps you identify the first controls or policy gaps to address in your organisation.

You leave with a Global Mobility Operating Pack developed during the course, including workflow maps, policy prompts, a cost-model template, compliance controls, vendor measures and a ninety-day action plan. The materials are designed for adaptation to your organisation's policy and approval structure.
