Course overview
Water use figures alone do not show environmental risk. A site consuming a modest volume in a water-scarce catchment may have a greater water-related impact than a larger user in a water-abundant region. Environmental, sustainability and operations professionals need a defensible way to distinguish withdrawals, consumption, discharge quality and location-specific impacts when setting targets, responding to customer questionnaires, preparing ESG disclosures or prioritising water-efficiency investment. This course provides that method using ISO 14046.
Participants learn how to structure a water footprint assessment as a life cycle assessment, from goal and scope definition through inventory analysis, impact assessment, interpretation and reporting. They identify direct and supply-chain water uses, define functional units and system boundaries, assess water quality and quantity data, apply spatial and temporal data requirements, and use the AWARE water scarcity method. The course also addresses data quality, allocation, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty and critical review expectations under ISO 14046 and ISO 14040.
Instruction combines worked examples, guided calculations, group review of water datasets and a five-day applied case study. Participants use an assessment workbook and openLCA-based modelling exercises to build a documented water footprint for a product, process or site scenario. They leave with a completed ISO 14046 assessment plan, a water inventory template, an impact-assessment decision record and a reporting structure that can be adapted for their organisation. A certificate of completion is awarded.
The course is suited to professionals moving from operational water management into life cycle-based environmental assessment, as well as managers who need to commission, review or act on water footprint studies with confidence.

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable reading process flow diagrams, water-balance data and basic spreadsheet tables, and should understand common operational terms such as withdrawal, discharge, consumption and wastewater. Familiarity with environmental management systems, life cycle assessment or corporate sustainability reporting is useful but not essential. Participants will work with provided datasets in Microsoft Excel and may view models in openLCA; prior openLCA experience is not required. No advanced mathematics, hydrology qualification, programming ability or previous ISO 14046 assessment experience is required. Complete beginners should expect structured guidance through each calculation and decision point.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led modules to explain each ISO 14046 requirement, followed by structured work on a continuing product-and-site case. Participants map flows in a process diagram, build a water inventory in Excel, review catchment-specific datasets, and model selected scenarios in openLCA. Small groups compare scope and allocation choices, test assumptions through sensitivity analysis, and critique sample reports. On the final day, each participant converts the case-study approach into an application plan for a real organisational water question.

Day 2: Water inventory analysis and data quality
- Water withdrawal, consumption, discharge and return-flow definitions
- Elementary flows and technosphere flows in life cycle inventory
- Site water-balance construction and process flow mapping
- Source types including surface water, groundwater, rainwater and municipal supply
- Wastewater releases, receiving environments and water-quality inventory data
- Primary, secondary and proxy data collection strategies
- Data quality indicators for geography, time, technology, precision and completeness
Workshop: Participants build a water inventory workbook from site meter readings, production data, supplier records and wastewater discharge information.
Day 3: Water scarcity impact assessment
- Life cycle impact assessment steps for water footprint studies

Day 4: Interpretation, uncertainty and reporting
