Course overview
Payment organisations are replacing legacy MT, proprietary, and flat-file formats with ISO 20022 messages that carry richer remittance, party, purpose, and regulatory data. The challenge is not simply reading XML: teams must determine which business requirements belong in pain.001, pacs.008, pacs.002, camt.053, or related messages; interpret market-practice rules; map legacy fields without losing meaning; and test messages across banks, payment hubs, ERP platforms, and APIs. Poor implementation decisions can cause rejected payments, repair queues, reconciliation failures, sanctions-screening gaps, and inconsistent customer reporting.
This five-day course develops practical capability in ISO 20022 payments messaging from payment initiation through clearing, settlement, status reporting, and cash management. Participants examine message structures, Business Application Headers, XML elements, code sets, identifiers, party roles, remittance information, and structured address requirements. They learn to analyse usage guidelines, create a source-to-target mapping specification, validate messages against schemas and market-practice rules, diagnose common rejection scenarios, and design test cases for payment flows. The course addresses both customer-to-bank and interbank messaging, including the relationship between ISO 20022 and SWIFT CBPR+ migration.
Delivery combines instructor-led explanation with guided message analysis, mapping workshops, XML validation activities, and a payment-implementation case study. Participants work with annotated sample pain, pacs, and camt messages, use message-validation and API-testing tools, and make implementation decisions based on realistic bank, corporate, and payment-service-provider requirements. They leave with an ISO 20022 implementation pack containing a message-flow diagram, a field mapping matrix, validation findings, exception-handling rules, and a prioritised adoption plan that can be adapted for their own programme.
The course is suited to professionals involved in payment operations, banking technology, treasury systems, integration, product ownership, and ISO 20022 migration governance who need to contribute credibly to design, testing, or operational readiness.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand the basic lifecycle of a payment: initiation, validation, clearing, settlement, confirmation, and reconciliation. Familiarity with payment terminology such as beneficiary, debtor, creditor, remittance information, BIC, IBAN, payment status, and exception repair is helpful. Participants should also be comfortable reading structured data such as XML, JSON, CSV, or system-interface specifications; no programming is required. Prior experience with SWIFT MT messages, payment hubs, ERP integrations, or banking APIs is useful but not essential. This is a foundation-to-intermediate course: complete beginners can attend, but should expect to spend time learning core payments vocabulary and XML navigation.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short technical briefings to establish payment-flow and message-design principles, followed by guided examination of real-world-style pain.001, pacs.008, pacs.002, and camt examples. Participants work in groups to map a legacy payment instruction, identify data-quality gaps, validate XML, and investigate a rejected transaction using status information. Case discussions address CBPR+ usage guidance, operational repair, and implementation governance. Each participant consolidates the week’s work into an application plan and implementation pack for a chosen bank, corporate, fintech, or payment-service-provider scenario.

- XML message anatomy: elements, attributes, cardinality, and nesting
- Business Application Header purpose and routing considerations

- Comparison of legacy MT messaging, proprietary formats, and ISO 20022 data richness
Workshop: Participants annotate a sample payment journey and identify the ISO 20022 messages, actors, data owners, and hand-off points required for the flow.

Day 4: Statuses, exceptions, reporting, and operational readiness

Day 5: Implementation planning and end-to-end design workshop
- ISO 20022 implementation phases: assessment, design, build, test, cutover, and stabilisation
- Message inventory and impact assessment across channels, systems, and counterparties
- Transformation patterns for MT-to-MX, CSV-to-XML, and API-to-ISO 20022 interfaces

Workshop: Participants complete an ISO 20022 implementation pack containing a message-flow design, mapping matrix, validation controls, test plan, risk register, and 90-day adoption roadmap.
