Course overview

Projects frequently underperform not because teams lack effort, but because governance, stakeholder engagement, planning, controls and decision rights are applied inconsistently across the organisation. ISO 21502:2020 provides a practical reference framework for directing and managing projects across predictive, adaptive and hybrid delivery environments. This course helps experienced project professionals translate the standard into repeatable working practices that improve project assurance, escalation, reporting and delivery discipline without imposing unnecessary bureaucracy.

Participants examine ISO 21502 principles, project context, governance structures, life-cycle practices, planning, benefits, resource management, risk, issues, change control and stakeholder engagement. They learn to tailor the standard to project size, complexity, delivery approach and organisational controls. Specific skills include creating an ISO 21502-aligned project charter, defining governance and role accountabilities, building integrated management plans, establishing tolerances and reporting controls, and mapping project practices to an assurance framework.

Instruction combines facilitated interpretation of ISO 21502 requirements and guidance with worked project scenarios, templates, peer review and instructor-led decision exercises. Participants apply the standard to a realistic cross-functional project and leave with an ISO 21502 Project Management Application Pack: a tailored charter, governance map, stakeholder strategy, integrated plan structure, risk and issue approach, control calendar and implementation action plan. A certificate of completion is issued following the five-day programme.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience of contributing to or managing projects and be comfortable with core concepts such as scope, schedule, budget, risks, stakeholders, milestones, change requests and project reporting. Familiarity with a project management method such as PMI, PRINCE2, Agile or an internal organisational framework is useful, because the course compares and tailors practices rather than teaching basic project terminology. Participants should be able to read project plans and status reports. Prior ISO standards knowledge, formal certification, advanced Microsoft Project skills and auditing experience are not required.

Training methodology

The course uses instructor-led standard interpretation, short demonstrations, facilitated discussions and progressive application to a single project case. Participants work in small groups to make governance choices, draft charter sections, analyse stakeholders, set control tolerances and test change scenarios against ISO 21502 guidance. The instructor reviews completed artefacts against practical usability and alignment with the standard, not merely template completion. On day five, each participant converts the case outputs into an implementation plan for their own project, PMO method or assurance process.

Workshop: Participants assess a project case against ISO 21502 context factors and produce a tailoring rationale identifying the controls required.

Day 2: Governance, roles and project initiation

• Project governance structures and oversight mechanisms

Day 3: Planning and integrated delivery management
