Course overview

ISO 26000 gives organisations a practical reference for embedding social responsibility into governance, operations, procurement, workforce practices and community relationships. Many CSR and HSE professionals can describe sustainability commitments but struggle to turn them into accountable actions, evidence trails and management decisions. This course addresses that gap by showing how to assess current practice against ISO 26000’s seven core subjects, identify material social-responsibility risks and opportunities, and build an implementation programme that can withstand stakeholder and management scrutiny.

Participants work through the standard’s principles, stakeholder identification process and seven core subjects: organisational governance, human rights, labour practices, environment, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community involvement and development. They learn to define an ISO 26000 implementation scope, conduct a gap assessment, map impacts and stakeholder expectations, prioritise actions using risk and influence criteria, assign owners, set performance indicators and integrate social responsibility into existing HSE, procurement, HR and governance systems. The course also distinguishes ISO 26000 guidance from certifiable management-system standards and from reporting frameworks such as GRI.

Delivery combines instructor-led interpretation of ISO 26000 with applied workshops, sector cases and peer review of working documents. Participants use structured templates to build a stakeholder map, core-subject gap assessment, prioritised action register, KPI set and implementation roadmap. Each participant leaves with an ISO 26000 Social Responsibility Implementation Pack tailored to their organisation or a realistic case organisation, ready to refine with internal stakeholders after the course.

The course is designed for practitioners who already contribute to CSR, sustainability, HSE, supply-chain responsibility, ESG coordination or corporate affairs and now need a disciplined method for moving from commitments to managed implementation.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret ISO 26000:2010 principles, definitions and seven core subjects in an organisational context
  • Conduct an ISO 26000 gap assessment using evidence-based maturity and conformity criteria
  • Map stakeholders using influence, dependency, impact and engagement-priority criteria
  • Identify material social-responsibility impacts across operations, workforce, supply chain and communities
  • Prioritise improvement actions through a risk, significance, control and organisational-influence matrix
  • Create an ISO 26000 implementation roadmap with owners, milestones, resources and governance controls
  • Define social-responsibility KPIs, evidence sources and review arrangements for management reporting
  • Prepare a stakeholder-ready Social Responsibility Implementation Pack for workplace use

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Build the ability to lead a structured ISO 26000 gap assessment rather than relying on broad CSR narratives
  • Gain a reusable method for linking stakeholder concerns to owned actions, controls and measurable indicators
  • Strengthen credibility when advising executives on human-rights, labour, supply-chain and community responsibilities
  • Produce an implementation portfolio that demonstrates practical ISO 26000 application capability
  • Improve readiness for sustainability, CSR, ESG and responsible-procurement leadership assignments

For your organisation

  • Establish a consistent method for assessing social-responsibility practice across business units and functions
  • Reduce reputational and operational exposure by identifying weak controls in labour, human-rights and supplier practices
  • Create clearer accountability through action owners, milestones, escalation routes and management-review inputs
  • Improve the quality of stakeholder engagement by prioritising groups according to impact and organisational influence
  • Generate evidence and KPIs that support CSR communications, ESG disclosures and internal governance reporting

Who should attend

  • CSR and Sustainability Managers — who must convert social-responsibility commitments into governed programmes
  • HSE Managers — who need to connect environmental and social impacts with existing management controls
  • ESG Managers and Coordinators — who require defensible implementation evidence behind disclosures and ratings
  • Procurement and Supply Chain Managers — who manage supplier conduct, human-rights and fair-operating-practice risks
  • Human Resources and Employee Relations Managers — who oversee labour practices, worker engagement and grievance arrangements
  • Corporate Affairs and Community Relations Managers — who must structure stakeholder engagement and community-development initiatives

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have working familiarity with their organisation’s sustainability, CSR, HSE, procurement, HR or governance arrangements, and be able to describe at least one operational process or stakeholder group. Experience reading policies, procedures, risk registers or performance reports is useful because exercises use these types of evidence. Basic spreadsheet confidence is assumed for prioritisation and KPI activities. Prior knowledge of ISO 26000 is not required, and no auditing qualification, legal training or ESG reporting certification is needed. Complete beginners to social responsibility can attend, but should expect to spend time learning the core terminology and organisational context before applying the implementation tools.

Training methodology

The five-day programme alternates focused instructor-led sessions with document-based application. Participants interpret ISO 26000 clauses and core subjects, then apply stakeholder mapping, impact assessment, gap-analysis and action-planning templates to a selected organisation or detailed case. Small groups test prioritisation decisions against human-rights, labour, environment and supply-chain scenarios, while the instructor challenges assumptions and reviews evidence quality. Daily workshops add sections to an individual implementation pack. The final session uses peer review and a management briefing simulation to turn that pack into an actionable workplace plan.

Frequently asked questions

No. The course explains the structure, principles and core subjects of ISO 26000 before participants use the implementation tools. Familiarity with your organisation’s policies, risk registers or sustainability activity will help you produce a stronger workplace plan.

A laptop with Microsoft Excel or equivalent spreadsheet software is recommended for the stakeholder, prioritisation and KPI templates. If permitted, bring non-confidential extracts from relevant policies, supplier requirements, HSE records or sustainability plans.

It suits intermediate practitioners responsible for CSR, sustainability, ESG coordination, HSE, procurement, HR or community relations. It is especially useful when an organisation has commitments or disclosures in place but lacks a structured implementation method.

This course focuses on changing organisational practice using ISO 26000, including governance, stakeholder engagement, impact prioritisation and action controls. GRI is addressed as a reporting link, but participants do not spend the week preparing a disclosure index or sustainability report.

You can use the templates to run a scoped gap assessment, convene stakeholders, prioritise actions and prepare a management decision paper. The roadmap format also helps coordinate work across HSE, procurement, HR and corporate-affairs teams.

You leave with an ISO 26000 Social Responsibility Implementation Pack containing a context statement, stakeholder map, impact register, gap assessment, action plan, KPI set and phased roadmap. It is a working draft designed for validation with your internal sponsors and stakeholders.
