Course overview
Organisations implementing ISO 45001 need more than a policy and a set of forms. They need a working occupational health and safety management system (OH&S MS) that identifies hazards, controls operational risks, involves workers, meets legal and other requirements, and produces evidence for management review and certification assessment. This course addresses the practical challenge faced by HSE professionals and operational leaders: translating the clauses of ISO 45001:2018 into assigned processes, documented controls, measurable objectives, and an achievable implementation plan.
Participants work through the ISO 45001 clause structure and build the core elements of an implementation programme. They learn to define organisational context and interested parties; establish OH&S scope; map legal and other requirements; conduct hazard identification and risk assessment; determine operational controls; manage change; investigate incidents; set objectives and KPIs; and prepare for internal audit and management review. The course also explains worker consultation and participation, contractor controls, emergency preparedness, documented information, and the relationship between ISO 45001 requirements and day-to-day site operations.
Delivery combines instructor-led clause interpretation with workshops based on realistic workplace scenarios, including a multi-site contractor and manufacturing case. Participants use implementation checklists, process maps, risk registers, legal-requirements matrices, and audit-ready evidence logs. Each participant leaves with a tailored ISO 45001 implementation roadmap, including priority gaps, accountable owners, required documents, milestones, and proposed performance measures that can be adapted for their own organisation.
The course is suited to professionals establishing a new OH&S management system, strengthening an existing HSE framework, or preparing a business unit for ISO 45001 certification. It is equally relevant to managers who need to sponsor implementation decisions and verify that safety controls are embedded in operational practice rather than held only in a manual.

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should have a basic awareness of workplace health and safety duties, such as hazard reporting, incident reporting, risk assessments, toolbox talks, permits to work, or contractor supervision. Familiarity with their organisation’s HSE procedures is helpful, particularly for those preparing an implementation plan. Participants should be comfortable reading policies, completing simple registers, and discussing operational processes. No prior ISO 45001 training, audit qualification, certification experience, specialist safety engineering knowledge, or dedicated HSE software is required. Complete beginners should expect an intensive introduction to both ISO terminology and practical management-system design.
Training methodology
The five-day programme combines instructor-led interpretation of ISO 45001:2018 with guided application to a realistic operating environment. Participants analyse clause requirements, map processes, complete hazard and compliance registers, and test operational controls against contractor, maintenance, and incident scenarios. Small-group workshops use implementation checklists and evidence examples to distinguish a documented procedure from an effective control. Facilitated peer review challenges assumptions and prioritises gaps. On the final day, each participant converts course outputs into a workplace-specific implementation roadmap for discussion with their manager or HSE sponsor.
Course outline
Day 1: ISO 45001 foundations and implementation architecture
- Purpose, scope, structure, and Annex SL high-level structure of ISO 45001:2018
- OH&S management system principles and the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle
- Clause 4 organisational context and internal and external issues analysis
- Interested parties, worker needs, and OH&S management system requirements
- Defining and documenting OH&S management system scope
- Process mapping, process ownership, inputs, outputs, and interfaces
- Gap assessment methods for existing HSE policies, procedures, and records
Workshop: Participants complete an ISO 45001 context, scope, and initial gap-assessment canvas for a case-study organisation.
Day 2: Leadership, consultation, planning and risk
- Clause 5 leadership accountability, OH&S policy, and delegated roles
- Worker consultation and participation mechanisms under ISO 45001
- Hazard identification across routine, non-routine, emergency, and human-factor activities
- OH&S risk assessment methods, risk criteria, and risk-register design
- Opportunities for OH&S improvement and management system enhancement
- Legal and other requirements identification, evaluation, and compliance matrix construction
- OH&S objectives, planning actions, resources, timescales, and performance measures
Workshop: Participants build a hazard and risk register with controls, legal obligations, responsible owners, and measurable objectives for a high-risk work scenario.
Day 3: Support systems and operational control
- Competence requirements, training needs analysis, and competence evidence
- Awareness, communication planning, and reporting routes for OH&S information
- Documented information control, retention periods, version control, and accessibility
- Operational planning and control using hierarchy-of-controls principles
- Contractor and outsourced-process control under ISO 45001
- Management of change for plant, processes, people, materials, and legislation
- Emergency preparedness, response testing, and post-event evaluation
Workshop: Teams design an operational-control package for contractor maintenance work, including competence checks, permit interfaces, communications, and change controls.
Day 4: Performance evaluation, incident learning and internal audit
- Monitoring, measurement, analysis, and evaluation requirements in Clause 9
- Leading and lagging OH&S indicators and KPI selection
- Compliance evaluation planning and evidence collection
- Incident, nonconformity, corrective action, and root-cause analysis
- Internal audit programme design using ISO 19011 principles
- Audit criteria, sampling, interview questions, findings, and audit reports
- Management review inputs, decisions, actions, and retained evidence
Workshop: Participants conduct a simulated internal audit, write evidence-based findings, and prepare corrective-action and management-review inputs.
Day 5: Implementation planning and certification readiness
- Sequencing ISO 45001 implementation workstreams and dependencies
- Prioritising gaps using risk, legal exposure, operational impact, and resource criteria
- Implementation governance, steering groups, process owners, and escalation routes
- Document hierarchy and minimum evidence required for each ISO 45001 clause
- Readiness review techniques before stage one and stage two certification audits
- Integrating ISO 45001 with quality and environmental management system processes
- Continual improvement planning after certification and surveillance audits
Workshop: Participants produce and peer-review a 90-day and 12-month ISO 45001 implementation roadmap with milestones, owners, resources, and evidence deliverables.
