Course overview

Asset-intensive organisations often have maintenance plans, CMMS data, capital projects and risk registers operating in parallel, without a common management system that connects asset decisions to organisational objectives. This creates avoidable lifecycle cost, inconsistent risk decisions, weak evidence for investment cases and difficulty demonstrating control to regulators, customers or executive leadership. ISO 55001 provides a structured way to establish, operate and improve an asset management system rather than treating asset management as a collection of maintenance activities.

This five-day implementation course teaches participants how to interpret ISO 55001 requirements and translate them into a practical asset management system (AMS). Participants work through organisational context, stakeholder requirements, asset management policy, Strategic Asset Management Plans (SAMPs), lifecycle decision-making, risk and opportunity management, asset information controls, performance evaluation, internal audit and continual improvement. They gain the ability to build an implementation roadmap, define measurable objectives, map evidence against requirements and identify the processes needed to govern maintenance, renewal and investment decisions.

Delivery combines instructor-led interpretation of the standard with facilitated workshops, worked engineering scenarios and document-development exercises. Participants apply the method to a realistic asset-intensive organisation and leave with an ISO 55001 implementation pack: a gap-assessment template, AMS process map, draft policy and objectives, SAMP structure, KPI scorecard and phased implementation plan. The course is delivered over five days in the classroom or live online, with a certificate awarded on completion.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have a working awareness of how their organisation manages physical assets, such as equipment, facilities, infrastructure, fleets or production systems. Familiarity with maintenance planning, work orders, asset registers, risk registers, capital projects or a CMMS/EAM system is useful because exercises use these concepts. Participants should be comfortable reading process maps, basic KPI tables and operational documentation. Prior ISO 55001 knowledge, audit qualifications, statistical analysis skills and experience with IBM Maximo or other enterprise asset management software are not required. Complete beginners can attend, but should expect to learn the core terminology alongside the implementation method.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led sessions to interpret ISO 55001, followed by practical implementation workshops built around an asset-intensive operating scenario. Participants review sample policies, SAMPs, risk registers, asset information requirements and audit evidence, then adapt the tools to their own context. Small-group exercises examine lifecycle decisions, governance responsibilities and KPI design across maintenance and capital planning. Each day closes with a structured output, and the final session converts these outputs into an organisation-specific 90-day and longer-term implementation plan.
