Course overview
Preventive maintenance in SAP PM fails when maintenance plans are copied without a sound design for equipment hierarchies, task lists, cycles, call horizons, completion requirements and scheduling parameters. The result is overdue work, duplicate notifications, poorly timed shutdown activities and unreliable maintenance-compliance reporting. This course gives maintenance and engineering professionals the configuration knowledge to translate asset-care requirements into controlled, executable SAP PM preventive maintenance processes.
Participants configure the SAP PM objects that support time-based, performance-based and strategy-based maintenance. They work with functional locations, equipment, work centres, maintenance items, task lists, maintenance plans, maintenance strategies, measuring points and counters. The course explains how scheduling parameters drive call objects and maintenance orders, how completion confirmation affects the next due date, and how to configure notification, order and reporting settings that support planners, technicians and maintenance managers.
Delivery combines instructor-led configuration demonstrations with guided work in an SAP training environment. Participants use SAP GUI, Fiori applications and IMG/SPRO configuration paths to build a preventive maintenance model for a realistic plant scenario. They leave with a completed configuration workbook containing master-data decisions, plan settings, scheduling rules, test cases and an implementation-ready preventive maintenance design that can be adapted for their site.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand basic maintenance terminology, including functional locations, equipment, maintenance orders, notifications and planned maintenance. Familiarity with navigating SAP GUI or SAP S/4HANA Fiori is useful because exercises use both interfaces. Experience creating maintenance plans as an end user will help, but is not essential. This is a foundation-to-intermediate configuration course: a complete beginner can attend if they are prepared to learn SAP PM master data and IMG/SPRO terminology. Prior ABAP programming, SAP Basis administration, integration development and advanced reliability-centred maintenance analysis are not required.
Training methodology
Each day combines focused instructor-led explanation with live SAP PM configuration demonstrations and supervised practice in a training system. Participants configure a connected plant scenario rather than isolated transactions: they establish master data, create task lists, set up plans and strategies, schedule calls, generate orders and investigate outcomes. Short case discussions address design choices such as calendar versus counter cycles and shutdown packages. Teams review configuration workbooks against operational requirements, then complete an individual application plan identifying settings, test cases and governance actions for their own environment.
