Course overview
Executive change programmes often fail not because the strategy is wrong, but because leaders underestimate the work required to create urgency, align senior sponsors, remove operational barriers, and sustain momentum after the launch. This course addresses the practical leadership challenge of moving an organisation through a high-stakes change such as restructuring, digital transformation, operating-model redesign, merger integration, cost reduction, or culture change. Participants learn to use Kotter’s 8-Step Process as an executive operating method rather than a communications checklist.
Across five days, participants examine each Kotter step in sequence: creating a credible sense of urgency; building a guiding coalition; shaping a clear change vision and strategic initiatives; enlisting a volunteer army; enabling action by removing barriers; generating short-term wins; sustaining acceleration; and instituting change in systems, behaviours, and leadership routines. They develop concrete executive skills in stakeholder and sponsor mapping, change narrative design, coalition governance, resistance analysis, barrier escalation, benefits tracking, and change adoption measurement.
The programme is delivered through instructor-led briefings, executive case analysis, facilitated workshops, peer challenge sessions, and structured work on a live or realistic organisational change. Participants use practical templates to build a Kotter-aligned Change Leadership Blueprint containing an urgency case, stakeholder map, coalition charter, vision narrative, communications actions, barrier-removal log, short-term-win plan, and reinforcement measures. The completed blueprint provides a defensible starting point for executive sponsorship discussions and programme mobilisation.
The course is suited to experienced leaders who are accountable for directing, sponsoring, or governing significant change, and who need a disciplined method for translating strategic intent into organisation-wide adoption.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Diagnose a change initiative against Kotter’s 8-Step Process and identify gaps in leadership, adoption, and momentum
- Construct an evidence-based urgency case using operational, customer, financial, risk, and workforce data
- Design a guiding coalition charter with defined sponsor roles, decision rights, meeting cadence, and escalation routes
- Develop a concise change vision, strategic initiatives, and leadership narrative for executive and employee audiences
- Map stakeholders, influencers, and resistant groups using a power-interest assessment and engagement plan
- Create a barrier-removal register that assigns owners, escalation actions, and resolution measures
- Build a short-term-win roadmap with measurable milestones, benefit indicators, recognition actions, and communication triggers
- Produce a Kotter-aligned Change Leadership Blueprint for application to a current organisational initiative
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable executive framework for diagnosing why a change programme is losing sponsorship or adoption momentum
- Strengthen credibility in steering committees by presenting urgency, coalition, barriers, and wins as connected leadership decisions
- Learn to convert broad transformation messaging into a clear vision narrative that leaders can communicate consistently
- Build practical evidence for prioritising resistance, escalation, and sponsor intervention rather than relying on anecdotal feedback
- Leave with a Change Leadership Blueprint that can support a sponsor briefing, programme reset, or promotion-level leadership assignment
For your organisation
- Improves alignment between executive sponsors, programme teams, and operational leaders through explicit coalition roles and decision rights
- Reduces change fatigue by sequencing communications, engagement, and short-term wins around a defined change narrative
- Surfaces delivery blockers earlier through a structured barrier-removal register and escalation process
- Increases accountability for adoption by linking leadership actions to measurable milestones, benefits, and reinforcement mechanisms
- Creates reusable Kotter-based templates for governing future transformation, restructuring, digital, and culture-change initiatives
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Chief Executives and Managing Directors — who must sponsor enterprise change and maintain visible leadership commitment
- Executive Directors and Business Unit Heads — who translate strategic change into operating priorities across functions
- Transformation Directors — who need a structured leadership method for mobilising complex change portfolios
- Programme Directors and Senior Programme Managers — who coordinate delivery dependencies and require executive adoption decisions
- HR Directors and Organisational Development Leaders — who shape culture, capability, communications, and reinforcement mechanisms
- Senior Change Managers — who advise sponsors and need to connect change-management activity to executive governance
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience leading, sponsoring, governing, or supporting a significant organisational change initiative, such as a transformation programme, restructuring, technology implementation, or policy rollout. Familiarity with basic project or programme concepts—including milestones, risks, stakeholders, governance, and benefits—is assumed. Participants should be able to discuss an active or recent change initiative without disclosing confidential information. A laptop with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is useful for workshop outputs. Formal change-management certification, prior knowledge of Kotter’s model, specialist analytics software, and advanced financial modelling skills are not required.
Training methodology
The course combines focused instructor-led teaching on Kotter’s eight steps with executive-level case studies and facilitated design workshops. Participants analyse a failing transformation scenario, test decisions through sponsor and stakeholder role plays, and use structured templates to build components of a live or simulated change plan. Small-group peer reviews challenge the quality of urgency evidence, coalition design, win metrics, and reinforcement actions. Each day closes with applied work, culminating in an individual Change Leadership Blueprint and a concise executive briefing on day five.
