Course overview
Major change programmes often stall not because the technical solution is weak, but because leaders underestimate urgency, fail to build a credible guiding coalition, or communicate a vision without translating it into daily action. Managers responsible for restructures, digital system rollouts, operating-model changes, mergers, service redesign, or culture initiatives need a disciplined way to move people from awareness to sustained adoption. This course applies Kotter’s Eight-Step Process to the practical leadership decisions that determine whether change gains momentum or becomes another unfinished initiative.
Participants work through all eight steps: creating urgency; building a guiding coalition; forming a strategic vision and initiatives; enlisting a volunteer army; enabling action by removing barriers; generating short-term wins; sustaining acceleration; and instituting change. They learn to diagnose resistance, segment stakeholders, assess sponsorship strength, map barriers, write targeted change messages, define measurable wins, and establish governance routines that keep the programme moving after launch.
Delivered through instructor-led teaching, facilitated case analysis, group workshops, and applied planning exercises, the course uses a realistic organisational change scenario alongside each participant’s own workplace initiative. Participants leave with a Kotter-based Change Leadership Action Plan containing an urgency case, coalition map, vision statement, stakeholder communication approach, barrier-removal log, short-term win plan, and sustainment measures. A certificate is awarded on completion.
The course is designed for experienced professionals who contribute to or lead change across teams, functions, or business units. It is especially valuable where a project plan exists but adoption, leadership alignment, behavioural change, or cross-functional commitment remains uncertain.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply Kotter’s Eight-Step Process to structure a live organisational change initiative
- Diagnose change readiness using urgency, stakeholder, sponsorship, and barrier assessments
- Construct a guiding coalition map that defines influence, authority, commitment, and leadership gaps
- Write a strategic change vision and initiative narrative that links business outcomes to employee action
- Design segmented communication messages using stakeholder needs, concerns, and channels
- Create a barrier-removal plan covering process, capability, resource, policy, and leadership obstacles
- Define measurable short-term wins with owners, timing, evidence, and recognition actions
- Produce a Kotter-based Change Leadership Action Plan for workplace implementation
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a recognised method for leading change conversations with sponsors, managers, and affected teams
- Build a practical portfolio artefact: a completed Kotter-based Change Leadership Action Plan
- Strengthen credibility when challenging weak sponsorship, unclear visions, or unrealistic adoption assumptions
- Learn to convert employee resistance into specific barriers, actions, owners, and measures
- Demonstrate capability to lead cross-functional transformation rather than only administer project activities
For your organisation
- Improves the likelihood that strategic initiatives achieve visible employee adoption rather than technical go-live alone
- Creates clearer sponsorship, coalition, and accountability structures across functions
- Reduces change fatigue by prioritising credible messages, local barriers, and achievable short-term wins
- Provides consistent language and planning tools for leaders managing multiple concurrent changes
- Strengthens sustainment planning so new behaviours, processes, and operating routines are embedded after implementation
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Change Managers — who need a repeatable leadership framework for improving adoption of major initiatives
- Programme Managers — who must coordinate business change alongside technical delivery milestones
- Transformation Leads — who need to build cross-functional commitment for operating-model or digital change
- Project Managers — who manage implementation risks and need stronger stakeholder adoption plans
- Business Unit Managers — who must translate enterprise change into local team action and performance
- HR and Organisational Development Professionals — who support leaders through culture, capability, and behaviour change
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience working on a business change, project, transformation, system implementation, service redesign, or team-level improvement initiative. They should understand basic project concepts such as stakeholders, milestones, risks, governance, and business cases, and be able to discuss a current or recent change challenge from their organisation. No formal change management certification, Kotter accreditation, statistical expertise, or specialist software knowledge is required. Participants do not need to be senior executives, but they should be prepared to analyse leadership decisions and apply the framework to a real workplace context.
Training methodology
The five-day programme combines instructor-led explanation of each Kotter step with a running business transformation case and application to participants’ own initiatives. Participants complete coalition-mapping, stakeholder-analysis, message-design, barrier-removal, and short-term-win workshops using structured templates. Facilitated group critiques test the practicality of plans against common failure points, including weak sponsorship, middle-manager resistance, competing priorities, and change fatigue. The final day uses peer review and instructor feedback to refine each participant’s end-to-end Change Leadership Action Plan.
