Course overview
Supply chain waste is rarely confined to one warehouse, buyer or carrier. Excess safety stock can mask inaccurate lead times; urgent purchase orders can create premium freight; large batch sizes can increase handling, ageing and obsolescence; and poorly designed replenishment rules can leave customers waiting while inventory accumulates elsewhere. This course equips supply chain professionals to identify these connected losses using Lean methods that work across procurement, planning, warehousing, transport and supplier operations.
Participants learn to distinguish value-added work from the eight Lean wastes in end-to-end material and information flows. They build current-state and future-state value stream maps, calculate takt time, lead time, inventory days, process cycle efficiency and first-pass yield, and use root-cause tools including 5 Whys, fishbone diagrams and Pareto analysis. The course applies pull replenishment, Kanban sizing, supermarket design, standard work, visual management, heijunka and supplier collaboration to practical supply chain constraints rather than treating Lean as a factory-only discipline.
Teaching combines instructor-led demonstrations with a running supply chain case involving demand volatility, long supplier lead times, warehouse congestion and expedited transport. Teams work with operational data in Microsoft Excel, construct a value stream map, prioritise waste using an impact-effort matrix, and test countermeasures against service, inventory and cost measures. Each participant leaves with a documented Lean supply chain waste-reduction charter: a current-state diagnosis, quantified opportunity statement, future-state design, 90-day action plan, KPI baseline and stakeholder ownership plan.
The course is designed for professionals who already work with supply chain data, processes or suppliers and need a disciplined method for converting improvement observations into measurable operational results. It is equally useful for managers sponsoring cross-functional inventory, lead-time or logistics cost reduction initiatives.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical exposure to at least one supply chain process, such as purchasing, demand planning, inventory control, warehousing, transport or supplier management. They should be comfortable reading basic operational measures including order quantities, lead times, stock levels, service levels and delivery performance. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel formulas, tables and charts is helpful because exercises use operational datasets, but advanced analytics or programming is not required. Prior Lean certification is not required; the course introduces the Lean tools used. Participants do not need access to an ERP system during the course.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short Lean method briefings followed by supply chain-specific data analysis, mapping and design exercises. Participants work in teams on a multi-echelon case covering supplier ordering, inbound receiving, warehouse replenishment and customer dispatch. They calculate baseline measures in Microsoft Excel, draw current- and future-state value stream maps, challenge assumptions through structured root-cause analysis, and test pull-system decisions. Daily debriefs connect each tool to participants' own operations. The final session is a facilitated application-planning workshop built around an actual workplace waste problem.
Course outline
Day 1: Lean thinking for end-to-end supply chain flow
- Customer value and value-added definitions in supply chain operations

- Demand patterns, takt time and service-level implications

Workshop: Teams conduct a waste walk through a simulated order-to-delivery process and produce a waste observation log with initial KPI hypotheses.
Day 2: Value stream mapping and waste diagnosis

Day 3: Pull replenishment and inventory flow control

Day 5: Future-state design and implementation planning
