Course overview

Legal compliance failures often arise from fragmented obligation registers, unclear ownership, weak evidence, and audit programmes that test policies rather than actual conduct. A legal compliance audit provides decision-makers with a disciplined assessment of whether applicable laws, licences, contractual duties, and regulatory requirements have been identified, assigned, controlled, monitored, and evidenced. It also distinguishes isolated control failures from systemic weaknesses requiring management action.

This course teaches participants to plan and conduct legal and regulatory compliance assessments using risk-based audit principles. Participants map legal obligations, define audit scope, assess compliance risks, test controls, collect defensible evidence, interview control owners, rate findings, and report conclusions. The programme addresses audit planning, sampling, document review, site inspection, management interviews, root-cause analysis, corrective action tracking, and follow-up assurance. It uses ISO 37301, ISO 19011, the COSO Internal Control Framework, and the Three Lines Model as practical reference points.

Teaching combines focused instructor briefings with realistic cases involving regulated financial services, public procurement, environmental permits, data protection, labour obligations, and anti-bribery controls. Participants progressively build an audit file during the first week, then deepen testing, reporting, remediation, and governance work during the second week. They leave with a reusable legal compliance audit package: scope statement, obligation register, risk assessment, audit programme, evidence plan, findings report, and corrective action tracker.

The course suits legal, compliance, internal audit, risk, governance, operational assurance, and regulatory affairs professionals who already work with policies, controls, legal obligations, or assurance reviews. It is particularly relevant for staff expected to assess compliance independently, support external inspections, or improve the quality of internal compliance reporting.

How the course runs

Training methodology

The programme uses short instructor briefings followed by structured case work, group exercises, audit simulations, and individual application planning. Participants work through a continuing compliance audit case, moving from scope and obligation mapping to testing, findings, remediation, and reporting. They review sample policies, registers, permits, contracts, interview notes, and control evidence. Facilitated peer review helps participants compare audit judgments, evidence sufficiency, risk ratings, and report wording before adapting the methods to their own workplace.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical familiarity with organisational policies, legal obligations, regulatory requirements, internal controls, risk registers, or assurance activities. Experience in compliance, legal, internal audit, risk, governance, quality, operations, or regulatory affairs is useful. Participants should be able to read policies, procedures, contracts, regulations, and management reports critically. Prior audit qualifications, legal degrees, accounting expertise, or knowledge of a particular jurisdiction are not required. The course explains core audit concepts before applying them to legal compliance assessments.

Frequently asked questions

You should understand how policies, procedures, legal duties, controls, or risk registers are used at work. Previous audit training or a law degree is not required.

Bring a laptop if possible and, where confidentiality permits, a redacted policy, compliance register, audit report, or control issue from your organisation. Course materials and case documents are provided.

It is designed for compliance, legal, internal audit, risk, governance, regulatory affairs, and operational assurance professionals. Managers responsible for permits, regulated processes, or corrective actions will also benefit.

General internal audit courses cover broad assurance methods across financial, operational, and strategic areas. This course applies those methods specifically to laws, regulations, licences, contractual duties, legal evidence, and regulatory reporting.

Participants build a reusable audit package containing an obligation register, risk assessment, audit programme, evidence plan, findings format, and action tracker. These can be adapted for a live compliance review after the course.

Each day runs from 08:30 to 16:30 and provides about 6.5 contact hours. The first week builds audit planning, obligation mapping, risk assessment, and testing methods; the second week focuses on findings, reporting, remediation, quality review, and the capstone audit file.
