Course overview
Physical access control administration affects more than door convenience. In healthcare, industrial, utilities and corporate sites, incorrect cardholder permissions, unreviewed access levels, poorly configured alarms and incomplete audit records can expose people, restricted areas and regulated operations to avoidable risk. This five-day LenelS2 OnGuard course prepares administrators to manage the day-to-day configuration and control activities that keep access decisions traceable, alarms actionable and security operations aligned with site procedures.
Participants work through the core OnGuard administration workflow: navigating System Administration, configuring cardholders and credentials, creating access levels, assigning readers and time zones, managing visitor access, defining alarm and event responses, and producing operational reports. The course also addresses account roles, operator permissions, access review methods, data-quality checks and common fault-isolation steps. By the end, participants can translate a written access policy into controlled OnGuard configuration rather than relying on informal, inconsistent permissions.
Instruction combines guided demonstrations with hands-on work in an OnGuard training environment. Participants build a controlled access model for a realistic multi-area site, including cardholder groups, doors, schedules, alarm priorities and reporting requirements. They leave with a completed access-control configuration workbook, an access-level design template, a cardholder administration checklist and a practical action plan for applying the methods to their own facility.

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable using Windows applications, managing records in a business system and interpreting basic physical-security terms such as cardholder, credential, reader, door, access level and alarm. Experience working in a security control room, facilities team or access administration process is useful, but prior LenelS2 OnGuard configuration experience is not required. Participants do not need SQL programming, database administration, network engineering or hardware installation skills. A complete beginner should expect to learn the OnGuard administration interface and core configuration logic before progressing to access design, alarm workflows and reporting.
Training methodology
The course is delivered through instructor-led demonstrations, guided configuration practice and scenario-based workshops in a LenelS2 OnGuard training environment. Participants configure a multi-area facility model, then test access decisions against role, schedule, visitor and emergency scenarios. Short case studies examine failed access attempts, expired credentials, alarm escalation and audit requests. Group discussions focus on converting local security procedures into controlled system settings. On the final day, each participant completes an application plan and configuration workbook for a realistic site administration use case.
