Course overview
Workplace security managers must protect people, premises, assets and operations while balancing access, service continuity, privacy, budgets and legal responsibilities. Weak security arrangements often show up as uncontrolled visitor access, inconsistent guard procedures, poorly documented incidents, incomplete threat assessments, or emergency plans that have never been tested. This course gives participants a structured way to identify these weaknesses, set proportionate controls and demonstrate that security decisions are based on evidence rather than assumptions.
Participants learn how to build a workplace security management framework around risk assessment, threat and vulnerability analysis, physical security, access control, contractor oversight, incident management and business continuity. They practise defining security objectives, assessing likelihood and impact, selecting preventive and responsive controls, writing post orders, creating incident escalation routes and measuring performance through meaningful security KPIs. The programme also examines the relationship between security, health and safety, facilities management, HR and operational leadership.
Instruction combines expert-led teaching with practical workplace scenarios, including an unauthorised-access event, a critical asset protection review and a security incident investigation. Participants use risk registers, control matrices, incident-reporting templates and action-planning tools that can be adapted for their own site. By the end of the week, each participant leaves with a documented Workplace Security Improvement Plan containing a prioritised risk register, selected controls, incident response actions and implementation responsibilities.
The course is designed for professionals with some responsibility for premises, people, site operations or protective services who need a practical foundation for managing security systematically. It is especially valuable where security arrangements must support safety, continuity and day-to-day operational access rather than operate as a standalone function.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have basic familiarity with a workplace, site operations or security-related responsibilities, such as supervising guards, managing facilities, coordinating visitors, responding to incidents or maintaining safety procedures. They should understand simple risk concepts, including hazard or threat, likelihood, consequence and control, and be comfortable reading policies, completing forms and using spreadsheets. Experience with security systems is useful but not essential. No prior certification in security management, policing, emergency response or ISO standards is required, and participants do not need technical installation skills for CCTV, alarms or access-control hardware.
Training methodology
The five-day programme uses instructor-led briefings to introduce security management methods, followed by guided application to realistic workplace scenarios. Participants work individually and in small groups to assess a site layout, score threats and vulnerabilities, select layered controls, draft access procedures and investigate a simulated incident. Facilitated discussions compare security decisions against operational, HSE and continuity requirements. Each day adds a component to an individual Workplace Security Improvement Plan, which is reviewed on day five through peer challenge and instructor feedback.

Day 1: Security management foundations and risk context
- Security management system principles and governance responsibilities
- Workplace security objectives, scope statements and asset classification
- Threat, vulnerability and consequence terminology
- ISO 31000 risk-management process applied to security
- Security stakeholder mapping across HSE, HR, facilities and operations
- Legal, privacy and duty-of-care considerations in workplace protection
- Security risk appetite, tolerance thresholds and treatment decisions
Workshop: Participants map a chosen workplace or case-study site, identify protected assets and stakeholders, and produce an initial security risk context statement.
Day 2: Threat assessment and layered protective controls
- Threat identification from crime patterns, site conditions and operational exposure
- Vulnerability assessment methods for people, premises and processes
- Likelihood and consequence scoring using a security risk matrix
- Layered security design using deterrence, detection, delay and response
- Perimeter protection, lighting, signage and environmental design principles
- CCTV, intrusion detection and alarm-response requirements
- Control selection, residual-risk evaluation and treatment planning
Workshop: Working from a site plan and threat brief, participants complete a vulnerability assessment and produce a prioritised control matrix.
Day 3: Access, personnel and contractor security

Day 4: Incident management and operational resilience

Workshop: Participants investigate a simulated unauthorised-access incident, build an evidence timeline and produce an incident report with corrective actions.
Day 5: Assurance, performance and improvement planning
