Course overview
Manufacturing sites depend on verified capability at the point of work, yet many skills matrices are static spreadsheets that do not show whether operators can run a specific machine, perform changeovers, complete quality checks, diagnose faults, or train others. Managers then make staffing, overtime, promotion and cross-training decisions with incomplete evidence. This course addresses the practical link between workforce capability, line performance and fair performance management across production, maintenance, quality and warehouse operations.
Participants learn to design a role-based manufacturing skills matrix that reflects critical tasks, required certifications, proficiency levels and recertification dates. They build observable performance standards for machine operation, standard work adherence, safety behaviours, quality execution and problem-solving contribution. The programme also covers competency assessments, assessor calibration, capability-gap analysis, cross-training plans, performance review evidence, succession coverage and dashboard reporting. Participants practise connecting skills data to operational measures such as OEE, first-pass yield, scrap, downtime, schedule attainment and labour flexibility without treating output figures as the only measure of individual performance.
Instructor-led sessions combine manufacturing case studies, Excel-based matrix design, assessment simulations, small-group calibration exercises and dashboard interpretation. Each participant works on a selected production area or realistic plant scenario throughout the week. They leave with a practical workforce performance management pack: a skills-matrix template, task competency framework, four-level proficiency scale, assessment guide, calibration process, gap-analysis report and 90-day implementation plan suitable for adaptation at their own site.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have working experience in a manufacturing, assembly, process, packaging, warehousing or maintenance environment, or support one as an HR or learning professional. They should understand basic production roles, standard operating procedures, quality checks and common operational measures such as downtime, scrap or OEE. Confidence using Microsoft Excel for tables, filters and simple formulas is helpful because matrix exercises use spreadsheet templates. No prior experience with SAP SuccessFactors, Power BI, formal competency frameworks, psychometrics or statistical analysis is required. Participants do not need to be engineers, but should bring awareness of a real work area or role family.
Training methodology
The five days are delivered through focused instructor-led teaching, facilitated plant scenarios and hands-on workbook development. Participants translate job roles into critical tasks, construct a matrix in Microsoft Excel, write assessment criteria, and compare rating decisions using video and case evidence. Small groups examine staffing and performance data to identify coverage risks and prioritise cross-training. Power BI examples show how capability information can be reported to managers. The final day uses an implementation clinic in which participants refine their own governance, communication and 90-day rollout plan.
