Course overview
Public relations teams are expected to explain how media attention, social conversation and stakeholder sentiment affect reputation, campaign performance and emerging risk. Meltwater can provide the evidence, but only when users can build precise searches, distinguish meaningful signals from noise, validate sentiment and translate platform data into communication decisions. This course helps PR professionals move beyond monitoring clips and mentions to producing defensible insight for campaign teams, executives and crisis-response groups.
Participants learn to configure Meltwater searches, source groups, dashboards, alerts and reports for brands, executives, issues, competitors and campaigns. They practise Boolean search design, query testing, social audience analysis, share-of-voice measurement, sentiment validation, trend identification and influencer assessment. The course also addresses practical PR measurement: selecting relevant KPIs, comparing coverage quality rather than volume alone, identifying escalation thresholds and connecting social listening findings to messaging, media relations and stakeholder communications.
Delivered through instructor-led demonstrations, guided Meltwater exercises and realistic PR scenarios, the programme uses a structured workflow from monitoring brief to executive-ready report. Participants work with sample brand and campaign data, diagnose weak search results, build reporting views and present recommendations to a simulated communications leadership team. Each participant leaves with a documented Meltwater listening plan, including Boolean queries, source selections, alert rules, dashboard specifications, KPI definitions and a reporting template that can be adapted for their organisation.
The course is suited to communications professionals who already understand core PR activity and need stronger evidence-led monitoring and reporting practice. It is particularly valuable for teams responsible for brand reputation, media intelligence, campaign evaluation, executive communications or issue management.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

- Analyse social conversation themes, audience interests and influential accounts to inform PR messaging
- Produce a defensible PR measurement framework linking Meltwater metrics to communication objectives

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience of public relations, corporate communications, social media management or media monitoring, and should understand basic concepts such as target audiences, campaign objectives, earned media, engagement and brand reputation. Familiarity with spreadsheets, including filtering data and creating simple charts, is useful. Access to a Meltwater account, training workspace or organisational login is required for the hands-on platform exercises; organisations should confirm user access before the course. Prior Boolean-search expertise, data-analysis qualifications, coding knowledge and prior use of Power BI are not required.
Training methodology
The instructor combines live Meltwater demonstrations with guided build sessions using PR monitoring briefs, campaign data and simulated reputation incidents. Participants individually construct searches, test false positives and negatives, configure dashboards and assess sentiment samples; small groups compare measurement choices and defend recommendations. Case work includes competitor visibility, a campaign launch and a fast-moving issue escalation. On the final day, each participant consolidates their work into a listening plan and presents a concise executive readout with actions, assumptions and limitations.
