Course overview

Procurement and supply chain teams need more than transaction-level familiarity with Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. They must configure and use purchasing policies, supplier records, inventory controls, planning parameters and warehouse processes in ways that support service levels, working-capital targets and auditable purchasing decisions. This course addresses the operational gap between knowing where to click in the system and understanding how procurement, inventory, production supply and fulfilment data affect one another across an end-to-end supply chain.

Participants work through the core Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management processes used to procure goods and services, manage vendors, control inventory, plan replenishment, execute warehouse operations and analyse supply chain performance. They learn to structure released products, item coverage and master planning settings; create and manage purchase requisitions, requests for quotation and purchase orders; process receipts and inventory transactions; use inventory dimensions and reservations; and interpret planning outputs, on-hand data and exception messages. The course also examines security, workflows and data governance choices that influence control and adoption.

Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations with guided configuration labs in a Dynamics 365 training environment. Participants complete a connected case study for a distribution business, moving from vendor onboarding and product setup through purchasing, receiving, replenishment and fulfilment. They leave with a completed supply chain process workbook containing process maps, key configuration decisions, planning parameter notes, control checkpoints and an action plan for applying the learning in their own environment.

This intermediate programme is suited to professionals who already work with purchasing, inventory, logistics or ERP data and need practical capability in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. It is equally valuable for managers sponsoring system adoption, process improvement or a Dynamics 365 implementation workstream.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience in at least one of procurement, inventory control, warehouse operations, demand planning or ERP administration. They should understand basic supply chain terms such as purchase order, lead time, safety stock, on-hand inventory, supplier, receipt and replenishment. Familiarity with navigating Microsoft Dynamics 365 or another ERP system is helpful, although prior Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management configuration experience is not required. Participants do not need programming, SQL, finance implementation expertise or advanced Power BI skills. A working knowledge of Excel for reviewing operational data is assumed.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led explanations followed by live Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management demonstrations and individual lab work in a configured training tenant. Each day extends a single distribution-business case: participants establish master data, source products, receive stock, run planning, execute warehouse work and analyse results. Facilitated group reviews compare parameter choices and operational consequences, including service risk, excess stock and control gaps. On day five, participants consolidate their case outputs into a practical process workbook and prioritised workplace application plan.

Day 1: Supply chain foundations and product master data

• Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management navigation, legal entities and operational workspaces
• Procurement, inventory, planning and warehouse process integration
• Product information management and released product lifecycle
• Product masters, variants and product dimension groups
• Storage dimensions, tracking dimensions and reservation hierarchies
• Item model groups, inventory models and costing implications
• Vendor records, vendor groups and approved vendor lists

Workshop: Participants configure released products, inventory dimensions and vendor records for a distribution case and produce a master-data control checklist.

Day 2: Procurement and supplier sourcing execution

• Procurement categories, category hierarchies and category policies
• Purchase requisition creation and workflow approval design
• Request for quotation processes and vendor bid comparison
• Purchase agreement terms, commitments and release orders
• Purchase order lifecycle from confirmation through product receipt
• Vendor collaboration and external document exchange options
• Three-way matching concepts and purchase invoice control points

Workshop: Participants run a requisition-to-receipt scenario, evaluate supplier quotations and produce a documented purchase award and approval trail.

Day 3: Inventory control and master planning

• On-hand inventory inquiry, availability calculations and inventory transactions
• Inventory journals for movement, adjustment, transfer and counting
• Cycle counting plans, counting groups and discrepancy handling
• Coverage groups, item coverage and replenishment principles
• Lead times, safety stock, minimum-maximum settings and reorder points
• Master planning runs, net requirements and planned order generation
• Action messages, delay messages and firming planned orders

Workshop: Participants set coverage parameters for selected items, run master planning and produce a replenishment decision log from planning exceptions.

Day 4: Warehouse operations and fulfilment control

• Warehouse-enabled items, sites, warehouses and locations
• Location profiles, location formats and inventory status control
• Inbound receiving, registration, put-away and quality order concepts
• Work templates and work pools for warehouse execution
• Location directives for put-away, picking and replenishment
• Mobile device menu items and warehouse worker task flows

Workshop: Participants configure and execute a receiving, put-away, replenishment and outbound picking flow, then produce a warehouse exception report.

Day 5: Performance analysis, governance and workplace application

• Supply chain workspaces, role-based security and segregation of duties
• Workflow governance, business events and operational alerts
• Inventory turnover, fill rate, supplier delivery and purchase price KPIs
• Power BI integration options for supply chain reporting
• Data quality controls for products, vendors, planning and inventory records

Workshop: Participants complete their supply chain process workbook and present a 90-day Dynamics 365 improvement plan with priorities, owners and KPIs.
