Course overview
Chief accountants are accountable for turning incomplete transaction streams, late reconciliations, judgement-heavy estimates and operational explanations into a reliable set of month-end numbers. The pressure is not simply to close quickly; it is to demonstrate that balances are supported, cut-off is correct, intercompany positions agree, exceptions are visible and management can act on the result. This course addresses the practical control problems that cause close delays, post-close adjustments, audit challenges and weak confidence in reported performance.
Participants learn to design and run a controlled close calendar, assign account ownership, set materiality-based review thresholds and manage the flow from subledgers to the general ledger. The programme covers balance-sheet reconciliations, accruals and provisions, revenue and expense cut-off, inventory and fixed-asset close activities, intercompany elimination, foreign-currency remeasurement, consolidation journals and analytical review. Participants also build variance explanations that distinguish operational drivers from accounting entries, and learn how to document evidence for controller, CFO and audit review.
Instruction combines worked accounting cases, close-file reviews, Excel-based reconciliation and variance-analysis exercises, and simulations using ERP close reports. Each participant develops a practical Month-End Close Control Pack for their own reporting environment. The pack includes a close timetable, responsibility matrix, critical-account reconciliation template, journal-entry approval checklist, unresolved-items log, variance-review dashboard and post-close improvement register. It is designed for immediate adaptation to the participant's entity, group reporting timetable and finance-system workflow.
The course is most valuable for chief accountants who own the integrity of statutory or management reporting, as well as senior finance staff preparing to assume close leadership. Managers approving attendance gain a structured way to reduce dependency on informal knowledge while strengthening evidence, accountability and escalation across the finance function.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design a month-end close calendar with dependencies, ownership, cut-off dates and escalation points
- Build a risk-ranked balance-sheet reconciliation matrix using materiality, ageing and account-risk criteria
- Prepare and review accrual, prepayment, provision and recurring-journal calculations with supporting evidence
- Apply revenue, purchase and inventory cut-off tests to identify misstated period-end transactions
- Reconcile intercompany balances and prepare elimination entries for group reporting
- Perform foreign-currency remeasurement and translate resulting differences into reviewed journal entries
- Construct an actual-versus-budget variance analysis that separates operational drivers from accounting movements
- Produce a Month-End Close Control Pack containing checklists, sign-offs, exception logs and review evidence
Benefits of attending
For you
- Run a defensible close timetable rather than relying on informal follow-up and last-minute corrections
- Strengthen credibility with CFOs and auditors through clearer reconciliation evidence and review sign-offs
- Diagnose balance-sheet issues using ageing, materiality and risk-based review criteria
- Explain monthly movements to non-finance leaders with driver-based variance narratives
- Leave with a reusable control-pack structure for leading future close cycles
For your organisation
- Reduces late close adjustments by assigning clear ownership, dependencies and escalation deadlines
- Improves balance-sheet reliability through standardised reconciliations and evidence-based account review
- Strengthens audit readiness with documented journal approvals, exception logs and retained support
- Provides management with faster, more credible variance explanations for operating decisions
- Decreases key-person dependency by converting close knowledge into repeatable templates and controls
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Chief Accountants — who own the integrity, timetable and evidence trail for month-end reporting
- Financial Controllers — who need consistent review controls across ledgers, entities and reporting packs
- Finance Managers — who supervise close teams and must resolve late journals, reconciliations and variances
- Senior Accountants — who prepare critical reconciliations, adjustments and management-reporting schedules
- Group Reporting Accountants — who coordinate intercompany matching, eliminations and consolidation submissions
- Internal Control Managers — who assess whether close activities produce auditable evidence and timely escalation
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience preparing or reviewing monthly accounts, including journal entries, trial balances, account reconciliations and basic variance reports. They should understand the relationship between the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets and inventory subledgers. Familiarity with Excel formulas, filters, PivotTables and common ERP reports is expected; participants should be able to read a balance sheet and profit-and-loss statement confidently. Prior exposure to IFRS or local GAAP is useful, particularly accruals, provisions and foreign currency, but specialist consolidation software knowledge and audit qualifications are not required.
Training methodology
The five-day programme uses instructor-led accounting clinics, guided Excel workbooks and realistic close scenarios based on a multi-entity finance function. Participants review trial balances, investigate unreconciled accounts, calculate accruals, challenge cut-off evidence and prepare consolidation journals from source schedules. Small-group review meetings simulate the conversation between chief accountant, finance manager and business owner when explanations are weak or deadlines are at risk. Each day adds components to an individual Month-End Close Control Pack, followed by an end-of-course action plan for implementation in the next close cycle.
Course outline
Day 1: Close governance, calendar and control architecture
- Month-end close objectives, reporting deadlines and critical path dependencies
- Close-calendar design using task sequencing, cut-off dates and hand-off controls
- RACI responsibility mapping for preparers, reviewers, approvers and escalation owners
- Materiality thresholds for account review, adjustments and management reporting
- Risk assessment of balance-sheet accounts by judgement, volume, ageing and fraud exposure
- Chart-of-accounts mapping between subledgers, general ledger and reporting packs
- Close-status dashboards and exception-log design for daily management meetings
Workshop: Participants map a 10-day close process and produce a risk-ranked calendar, RACI matrix and escalation log for a sample finance function.
Day 2: Reconciliations, journals and period-end estimates
- Balance-sheet reconciliation standards, certification language and evidence requirements
- Bank, receivable, payable and suspense-account reconciliation techniques
- Ageing analysis for stale reconciling items, unapplied cash and dormant balances

- Provision assessment using obligation, probability, estimation and documentation criteria
- Manual journal-entry risk indicators, approval workflows and supporting schedules
- Fixed-asset depreciation, capitalisation review and asset-disposal close procedures
Workshop: Participants prepare a critical-account reconciliation file, calculate accruals and complete a journal-review checklist from a case trial balance.
Day 3: Cut-off, inventory, intercompany and currency close

- Intercompany elimination entries for sales, balances, profit and unrealised margin
- Foreign-currency remeasurement of monetary items at period-end exchange rates
- Translation differences, exchange-rate source controls and journal support documentation
Workshop: Participants investigate a cut-off and intercompany mismatch case, then produce correcting entries and an unresolved-items escalation note.
