Course overview
Month-end close in NetSuite can become slow and difficult to control when journal entries sit in multiple queues, subsidiary balances do not reconcile, period tasks are completed out of sequence, and management reports require spreadsheet rework. Finance professionals need more than transaction-entry knowledge: they must understand how NetSuite accounting configuration, workflows, controls and reporting tools affect the accuracy, auditability and speed of the close. This course addresses the practical work of running a reliable multi-entity financial close in NetSuite.
Participants learn to configure and use the accounting features that support controlled close processes, including the chart of accounts, accounting periods, accounting preferences, classifications, subsidiaries, intercompany accounting, foreign currency revaluation and allocations. They work through the Period Close Checklist, investigate reconciliation exceptions, prepare adjusting journals, manage approval controls, and build financial statements that provide usable variance analysis. The course also covers SuiteAnalytics Workbook and the Financial Report Builder for producing close packs without repeated offline manipulation.
Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations in NetSuite with guided exercises based on a realistic multi-subsidiary organisation. Participants complete close activities, diagnose common posting and reconciliation issues, and build reports for finance leadership. They leave with a documented NetSuite month-end close runbook: a practical sequence of tasks, ownership points, controls, reconciliations, report outputs and exception-handling actions that can be adapted to their organisation.
The course is designed for experienced accountants, finance systems users and NetSuite administrators who support financial operations. It is particularly relevant to teams standardising close procedures after a NetSuite implementation, adding subsidiaries, improving reporting discipline, or reducing the reliance on manual spreadsheet-based controls.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Configure accounting periods, period-end controls and the NetSuite Period Close Checklist for a controlled monthly close
- Apply subsidiary, location, department, class and custom segment structures to support accurate financial reporting
- Prepare and approve standard, recurring, reversing and intercompany journal entries using appropriate posting controls
- Perform foreign currency revaluation and translation processes and investigate resulting unrealised gain or loss postings
- Execute allocation schedules and validate allocation results against source balances and accounting rules
- Reconcile key balance sheet accounts by tracing NetSuite transactions, journals and supporting reports
- Build management-ready income statement, balance sheet and cash flow reports with Financial Report Builder and SuiteAnalytics Workbook
- Produce a NetSuite close runbook with task sequencing, ownership, evidence requirements and escalation points
Benefits of attending

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Financial Controllers — who own close quality, reporting accuracy and financial control across the organisation
- Finance Managers — who coordinate month-end activities and need reliable management reporting from NetSuite
- Senior Accountants — who prepare journals, reconciliations, revaluations and period-end adjustments
- Management Accountants — who analyse actuals, allocations and variances by subsidiary or business segment
- NetSuite Administrators — who configure accounting workflows, roles, periods and reporting access for finance teams
- Finance Systems Analysts — who support NetSuite process design, data quality and close-process improvement
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience using NetSuite for general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries or financial reporting, and should understand double-entry accounting, trial balances, accruals, prepayments, reconciliations and month-end close concepts. Familiarity with their organisation’s chart of accounts and approval process is helpful. Participants should be comfortable navigating NetSuite records, saved searches and standard reports. Prior NetSuite administration, SuiteScript development, formal accounting qualifications or advanced Excel modelling are not required. This is not a first introduction to bookkeeping or basic NetSuite transaction processing.
Training methodology
The five-day programme uses instructor-led NetSuite demonstrations followed by structured work in a training account. Participants complete period-close tasks for a multi-subsidiary case organisation, including journals, allocations, intercompany processing, revaluation, reconciliations and management reporting. Short case reviews focus on common exceptions such as locked periods, unbalanced intercompany entries and report-to-ledger differences. Group workshops compare control designs and close responsibilities. On the final day, each participant converts the exercises into an application plan and a tailored close runbook for their own finance environment.
