Course overview
Nonprofit marketing teams are expected to attract new supporters, retain existing donors, demonstrate impact and generate reliable income with limited budgets and fragmented data. Too often, appeals are planned as isolated campaigns, donor communications are sent without meaningful segmentation, and stewardship activity depends on individual staff knowledge rather than a repeatable process. This course helps participants turn donor data, mission evidence and supporter insight into coordinated engagement that improves response, retention and lifetime value.
Participants learn to build a donor-centred marketing strategy across acquisition, welcome journeys, regular giving, appeals, events, major-donor communications and reactivation. They practise developing donor personas, journey maps, value propositions, campaign briefs, segmented email plans, direct-response messages and impact stories. The course also covers consent management, ethical storytelling, CRM data hygiene, channel selection, testing plans and performance measures such as response rate, conversion rate, average gift, retention rate and donor lifetime value.
Delivery combines instructor-led teaching with nonprofit case studies, message clinics, CRM segmentation exercises and campaign-planning workshops. Participants work on a realistic charity scenario throughout the week, making decisions about audience priorities, offer structure, channel mix and reporting. They leave with a practical Donor Engagement Campaign Playbook containing a donor journey map, segment definitions, campaign calendar, sample communications, measurement dashboard specification and a 90-day implementation plan.
The course is suited to fundraising, marketing, communications and supporter-care professionals who need stronger control over the full donor experience, from first response through to long-term stewardship. It is also valuable for managers seeking a consistent, measurable approach to supporter communications across teams and channels.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Build donor personas using CRM records, giving behaviour and supporter motivations
- Map an end-to-end donor journey from acquisition through renewal, upgrade and reactivation
- Create segmented campaign audiences using demographic, behavioural, recency and value criteria
- Write donor-centred appeal messages using a proposition, proof, urgency and call-to-action framework
- Design automated welcome and stewardship journeys with trigger-based communications
- Calculate campaign performance using response rate, conversion rate, retention rate, average gift and donor lifetime value

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should understand their organisation’s mission, main donor groups and current fundraising or communications activity, and should be comfortable working with spreadsheets, email and basic campaign data. Familiarity with terms such as donation, regular giver, appeal, consent and CRM is useful but not essential. Participants will benefit from bringing anonymised examples of a recent appeal, welcome email or donor report if permitted. No prior marketing qualification, copywriting portfolio, data-analysis background or advanced Salesforce, HubSpot, Mailchimp or Google Analytics 4 expertise is required.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led sessions to introduce donor-engagement models, followed by practical application to a continuing nonprofit case. Participants analyse sample CRM records, define segments in spreadsheet exercises, critique appeals, draft email and direct-mail messages, and build journey maps in small groups. Case discussions examine regular giving, emergency appeals, legacy communications and donor reactivation. Each day closes with a working output that is added to the final Donor Engagement Campaign Playbook. On day five, participants present their plan, receive structured peer and instructor feedback, and identify immediate workplace actions.
