Course overview
Oil and gas revenue errors rarely arise from one ledger entry alone. They emerge where production volumes, custody-transfer measurements, sales contracts, joint operating agreements, royalty terms, price adjustments, transportation deductions and accounting postings do not reconcile. Finance and audit professionals need to test the full revenue chain, identify whether a variance is operational, contractual or accounting-related, and document conclusions that can withstand management, partner, regulator and external-audit scrutiny.
This five-day course develops practical revenue-audit capability across upstream and midstream revenue processes. Participants trace hydrocarbons from wellhead or delivery point through allocation, measurement, pricing, invoicing, cash receipt and general-ledger recognition. They apply risk-based audit planning, build reconciliations between production, sales and financial records, test royalty and working-interest calculations, review revenue recognition under IFRS 15, assess joint venture billings, and use substantive and analytical procedures to investigate exceptions. The programme also addresses audit evidence, sampling, materiality, control testing and clear issue reporting.
Instruction combines targeted technical sessions with worked oil and gas data sets, contract extracts, production statements, sales invoices and ledger reports. Participants use Excel-based audit schedules to perform volume-to-value reconciliations, price tests and variance analysis, then document findings in a professional audit format. Each participant leaves with a completed oil and gas revenue audit work-program workbook, including a risk-and-control matrix, testing sheets, exception log, draft findings and a 90-day workplace application plan. A certificate is awarded on successful completion.
The course is designed for finance, internal audit, revenue accounting and commercial assurance professionals who need a firm foundation and immediately usable intermediate techniques for auditing oil and gas revenue.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Map an end-to-end oil and gas revenue process from production measurement to cash receipt and general-ledger posting
- Build a risk-and-control matrix for production allocation, pricing, invoicing, royalties and revenue recognition
- Reconcile production volumes, sales nominations, custody-transfer statements and revenue ledger balances using Excel
- Test crude oil, natural gas and NGL pricing against contract formulas, market indices and adjustment clauses
- Recalculate royalty, overriding royalty and working-interest revenue allocations from contract and ownership data
- Apply IFRS 15 principles to assess performance obligations, timing of recognition and variable consideration in hydrocarbon sales
- Design substantive procedures, samples and evidence requests for a risk-based revenue audit work program
- Draft audit findings with quantified impact, root cause, control recommendation and management action
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain the ability to trace a reported revenue balance back to production, allocation, contract and settlement evidence
- Produce Excel audit schedules that quantify volume, price, timing and ownership variances
- Build credibility when challenging unexplained pricing deductions, royalty calculations and partner allocations
- Apply a repeatable work program to internal audit assignments, month-end reviews and external-audit support
- Develop sector-specific evidence for progression into revenue assurance, joint venture accounting or energy audit roles
For your organisation
- Reduce the risk of unrecorded, duplicated or inaccurately priced hydrocarbon sales
- Strengthen controls linking production measurement, commercial settlements and financial reporting
- Identify royalty, working-interest and transportation-deduction errors before they become disputes or restatements
- Create more consistent audit documentation, sampling decisions and issue ratings across revenue reviews
- Improve management visibility of revenue leakage through quantified exceptions and root-cause reporting
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Internal Auditors — who must test revenue controls and investigate production-to-cash exceptions
- Revenue Accountants — who prepare or review sales, royalty, joint-interest and revenue-recognition entries
- Finance Managers — who need defensible assurance over reported hydrocarbon revenue and close processes
- Joint Venture Accountants — who validate ownership allocations, partner billings and revenue-sharing calculations
- Commercial Analysts — who review sales contracts, pricing formulas, nominations and settlement adjustments
- External Audit Associates — who require industry-specific procedures for testing oil and gas revenue assertions
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable reading basic financial statements, journal entries, invoices and account reconciliations, and should understand debit-and-credit logic and common audit terms such as evidence, control and materiality. Familiarity with Excel formulas, filters and pivot tables is expected because exercises use working audit schedules. Prior exposure to oil and gas production reports, sales contracts, joint operating agreements or royalty statements is helpful but not essential. No petroleum engineering qualification, prior SAP experience, coding ability or advanced statistical audit training is required. Complete beginners should expect to spend time learning sector terminology and document flows before progressing to detailed testing.
Training methodology
The instructor leads short technical briefings followed by practical analysis of an integrated oil and gas revenue case. Participants work with production statements, allocation schedules, sales agreements, price indices, invoices, royalty data and general-ledger extracts. Individual Excel exercises build core testing skills; small groups assess control failures and defend proposed audit procedures. Daily debriefs compare approaches to evidence, materiality and issue rating. On the final day, each participant converts the case work into a tailored revenue-audit plan for a current or anticipated assignment.

- Upstream, midstream and marketing revenue streams
- Hydrocarbon lifecycle from production to settlement
- Crude oil, gas and NGL measurement concepts
- Production allocation and ownership interest fundamentals
- Revenue assertions for completeness, occurrence, accuracy and cut-off
- Revenue-process walkthroughs and document-flow mapping
