Course overview
Audit teams are expected to test larger populations, identify exceptions earlier, and support conclusions with reproducible evidence rather than spreadsheet-based samples alone. Caseware IDEA enables auditors to interrogate entire transaction files for duplicate payments, missing sequences, unusual values, unmatched records, aged items, and control breaches. This course addresses the practical gap between receiving a client data extract and producing audit-ready findings that can be traced, reviewed, and incorporated into working papers.
Participants learn a structured Caseware IDEA workflow: importing and validating files, profiling fields, documenting data reliability, applying criteria and calculations, joining related files, detecting duplicates and gaps, stratifying populations, selecting samples, and using Benford's Law appropriately. They build tests for common audit areas including accounts payable, revenue, payroll, journals, receivables, and inventory. The course also covers audit trail management, result interpretation, and the distinction between an exception report and an audit conclusion.
Delivery combines instructor demonstrations with guided analysis of realistic accounting data sets. Each participant works in Caseware IDEA to construct, run, and refine tests, then records the objective, data source, parameters, results, and follow-up actions in an audit analytics workbook. By the end of the week, participants leave with a reusable IDEA test library and a documented analytics workpaper pack that can be adapted for a live engagement.

Requirements and prerequisites

No prior Caseware IDEA experience, coding knowledge, SQL, database administration or statistical specialism is required. Complete beginners to audit analytics can attend, but should expect to work carefully through file structures, data validation and guided IDEA exercises before designing tests independently.
Training methodology
The instructor introduces each IDEA capability through a live audit scenario, then participants apply it to supplied general ledger, accounts payable, payroll and sales files. Exercises progress from import and validation to multi-file tests, with discussion of the assertion, risk and follow-up behind each procedure. Participants compare outputs in small review groups, identify false positives, and refine criteria before documenting the workpaper. The final day uses an end-to-end case in which each participant plans a practical analytics application for a current or anticipated audit area.

Day 2: Building core audit tests and exception populations

- Gap detection in cheque numbers, purchase orders and journal sequences
- Identifying round-dollar, weekend and out-of-period transactions

Day 3: Matching files and analysing transaction relationships

- Performing matches to identify unmatched payments and invoices
- Comparing general ledger postings to subsidiary ledger populations
- Summarising transactions by vendor, account, preparer and period
- Stratifying populations by value, risk characteristic and account class

Workshop: Participants match purchase orders, goods received notes, invoices and payments to create a three-way-match exception report.
Day 4: Applying audit analytics to key financial cycles
- Journal-entry testing using user, timing, narration and amount attributes
- Benford's Law analysis and appropriate interpretation of digit results
- Revenue cut-off testing using invoice, shipment and posting dates
- Payroll testing for duplicate bank accounts and unusual employee payments
- Receivables ageing analysis and overdue balance exception criteria
- Inventory movement testing for negative quantities and inactive stock

Workshop: Participants select one financial cycle and create a risk-based IDEA procedure with exception criteria, output fields and review notes.
