Course overview
Finance teams depend on Oracle NetSuite to turn transaction data into reliable ledgers, close-period evidence and management reporting. Yet many users can post transactions without fully understanding how account types, subsidiary structures, accounting periods, classifications and posting rules affect the general ledger. The result can be unexplained balances, inconsistent reports, slow month-end close activities and excessive reliance on system administrators. This course equips finance professionals to work confidently within NetSuite’s general ledger and reporting environment while preserving control, traceability and reporting consistency.
Participants learn how NetSuite creates and maintains GL impact from standard transactions, journals, allocations and adjustments. They configure and use the chart of accounts, accounting periods, departments, classes, locations, subsidiaries and custom segments to support meaningful financial analysis. The course covers journal entry processing, recurring journals, intercompany accounting concepts, period-end tasks, account reconciliation preparation, financial statement layouts, saved searches, SuiteAnalytics Workbook and report customisation. Participants also learn to investigate unexpected GL balances, apply report filters and drill-downs, and distinguish operational reporting from statutory and management reporting requirements.
Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations with guided work in a NetSuite training environment. Participants complete transaction-to-report exercises, build a monthly reporting pack, investigate posting exceptions and practise applying period-close controls. The final workshop produces a practical GL and financial reporting operating checklist, including close tasks, key reports, control points and escalation actions that can be adapted for the participant’s own finance function.
The course is suited to finance professionals who use, support or review NetSuite financial data, as well as managers responsible for improving close quality and reporting reliability. It is particularly valuable where organisations are standardising reporting across subsidiaries, replacing spreadsheet-led processes or preparing staff to take greater ownership of NetSuite finance operations.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Configure a NetSuite chart of accounts with appropriate account types, numbering and inactive-account controls
- Analyse transaction GL Impact to trace postings from source documents to ledger balances
- Process standard, recurring and reversing journal entries with suitable approval and period controls
- Apply departments, classes, locations, subsidiaries and custom segments to support dimensional reporting
- Manage accounting periods, period-close tasks and reopen controls for a controlled month-end process
- Build customised income statement, balance sheet and cash flow reports using NetSuite Financial Report Builder
- Create saved searches and SuiteAnalytics Workbook analyses for ledger exceptions and management reporting
- Produce a GL and financial reporting operating checklist for month-end close and report distribution
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain the confidence to trace an unexpected balance from a financial report back to its source transaction

- Decrease spreadsheet dependency by enabling users to build controlled NetSuite reports, searches and workbooks

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Financial Accountants — who prepare journals, reconciliations and period-end financial statements in NetSuite
- Management Accountants — who need reliable segment, department and subsidiary reporting for performance analysis
- Finance Managers — who oversee close controls, ledger integrity and financial report review
- NetSuite Finance Administrators — who support finance users and maintain financial setup, roles and reports
- Accounts Payable and Receivable Supervisors — who need to understand how operational transactions affect the GL
- Internal Auditors — who review posting controls, period governance and financial reporting evidence
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand double-entry bookkeeping, including debits and credits, account classifications, journals, trial balances, accruals and basic financial statements. Familiarity with a finance or ERP system is helpful, and participants will benefit from having seen their organisation’s chart of accounts and month-end process. No prior NetSuite configuration experience, SuiteScript development knowledge or advanced accounting qualification is required. This is a foundation-to-intermediate course: complete beginners to NetSuite can attend, but should expect to spend time learning the navigation, record structure and terminology alongside the financial management content.
Training methodology
An instructor leads short, finance-focused demonstrations in Oracle NetSuite, followed by guided exercises in a training account. Participants post transactions and journals, inspect GL Impact, work with accounting periods and dimensions, and create reports, saved searches and SuiteAnalytics Workbook analyses. Case work uses a multi-department, multi-subsidiary organisation with realistic close and reporting issues, including mispostings and unexplained variances. Peer review is used to test report usefulness and control design. On the final day, each participant converts course outputs into an application plan for their own month-end reporting responsibilities.
