Course overview
Agricultural projects often identify value chains, train producers, and distribute inputs without changing the relationships, services, incentives, and rules that keep smallholders excluded from viable markets. Participatory Market System Development (PMSD) addresses this problem by bringing farmers, buyers, input suppliers, financial-service providers, transporters, and public actors into a structured process for diagnosing market constraints and co-creating commercially sustainable solutions. This course equips practitioners to move beyond direct delivery models and design interventions that can continue after project funding ends.
Participants learn to analyse agricultural market systems using market maps, transaction pathways, stakeholder influence analysis, and root-cause tools. They practise facilitating multi-stakeholder workshops; identifying systemic constraints in core market exchanges, supporting functions, and formal or informal rules; and selecting interventions based on incentives, feasibility, inclusion, and scale potential. The course also covers business model development, facilitation plans, risk analysis, monitoring of systemic change, and adaptive management using the DCED Standard for Results Measurement.
Teaching combines focused instructor-led sessions with an agricultural market-system case running through the five days. Participants work in teams to map a selected commodity system, validate findings with stakeholder perspectives, design a market-facilitation intervention, and build an evidence plan. Each participant leaves with a practical PMSD intervention concept note, including a market map, stakeholder engagement plan, change pathway, partnership approach, indicators, assumptions, and an implementation roadmap that can be adapted for an active project or proposal.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical exposure to agricultural value chains, rural livelihoods, agribusiness development, or donor-funded project implementation. Familiarity with basic concepts such as producers, aggregators, buyers, input suppliers, market services, project logframes, and stakeholder engagement is assumed. Participants should be comfortable reading simple market data and using spreadsheet tables; Microsoft Excel will be used for selected exercises. No prior PMSD certification, econometric training, specialist market-research software, or advanced financial-modelling capability is required. Those new to market systems should expect a demanding five days and should review one current agricultural project or commodity context beforehand.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led briefings to introduce PMSD concepts, followed by guided application to an agricultural commodity case. Teams build market maps in Kumu, analyse actor incentives, conduct role-play stakeholder consultations, and compare intervention options using structured decision criteria. Case discussions examine both successful facilitation and common failures such as crowding out local providers or subsidising non-viable services. Each day closes with a practical output that feeds the final intervention concept note. On day five, participants present their design, receive peer and instructor challenge, and prepare a 90-day application plan for their own project context.
