Course overview

Payroll errors create immediate financial, legal and employee-relations consequences. Incorrect pay, missed statutory remittances, weak approval trails and poorly controlled bank-detail changes can lead to penalties, fraud exposure, rework and loss of employee trust. Payroll teams must process high volumes accurately while managing changing pay data, variable payments, tax rules, benefits deductions and tight payment deadlines.

This course develops the controls, routines and evidence needed to run payroll accurately and accountably. Participants examine the full payroll cycle, from employee master data and time inputs through gross-to-net calculations, payment release, reconciliations, statutory reporting and year-end activities. They learn to design control matrices, apply segregation of duties, investigate exceptions, assess fraud risks, manage payroll-provider performance and report payroll risks to management.

Teaching combines focused instructor briefings with payroll cases, group analysis, control-design activities, reconciliation simulations and structured application planning. Participants work with realistic payroll registers, exception reports, bank-file scenarios, employee data changes and audit findings. Each participant leaves with a payroll control improvement pack containing a control-risk register, reconciliation checklist, segregation-of-duties matrix, payroll calendar and 90-day action plan. The course is delivered over five days in classrooms in 50+ cities or live online, with approximately 6.5 contact hours each day. Participants receive a certificate of completion.

The course is suited to professionals who already work with payroll, HR operations, finance controls or outsourced payroll services and need stronger control over payroll accuracy, compliance and payment risk.

How the course runs

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor briefings followed by payroll cases, group exercises, reconciliation simulations and control-design work. Participants analyse employee master-data changes, overtime inputs, variable-pay files, payroll registers, payment exceptions and audit findings. Facilitated discussions compare control choices for in-house and outsourced payroll models. Trainers use practical templates throughout, then guide participants in adapting the methods to their own payroll process, risk priorities and reporting requirements.
