Course overview
Public relations teams are increasingly expected to demonstrate how earned coverage, owned content, social conversation and paid amplification work together to influence reputation, demand and stakeholder action. Yet many plans still treat media relations, social media, email, websites and sponsored content as separate activities, producing inconsistent messages, duplicated spend and reporting that stops at clips, impressions or engagement. This course addresses the practical challenge of designing an integrated communications programme using the PESO Model: Paid, Earned, Shared and Owned media.
Participants learn how to translate a business objective into a PESO communications architecture, identify the role of each channel, develop audience-led messages and connect media activity to measurable outcomes. The course covers channel selection, stakeholder and influencer mapping, newsworthy story development, owned-content planning, social listening, paid amplification, newsroom workflows and cross-channel measurement. Participants practise using message houses, content matrices, editorial calendars, media lists, UTMs and measurement dashboards to plan campaigns that are coherent, accountable and ready for execution.
Delivered through instructor-led teaching, channel-planning workshops, communications case studies and peer critique, the five days move from diagnosis to a complete integrated campaign plan. Participants work with a realistic brief or an approved live organisational challenge and leave with a PESO communications blueprint: objectives, audience segments, message platform, channel map, content and media plan, budget assumptions, measurement framework and 90-day activation roadmap. This is a practical document that can be refined with internal stakeholders after the course.
The course is designed for communications and marketing professionals who already contribute to campaigns and now need a repeatable method for integrating PR with digital, social and paid activity. It is equally valuable for managers seeking clearer governance, more defensible channel investment and reporting that links communications activity to organisational outcomes.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Construct a PESO Model channel architecture aligned to a defined business, reputation or behaviour-change objective
- Segment priority audiences using stakeholder mapping, insight statements and channel-preference evidence
- Develop a message house with proof points, narrative themes and channel-specific calls to action
- Create an integrated content matrix that assigns owned, earned, shared and paid assets to each campaign phase
- Build a media and influencer outreach plan using news angles, target-list criteria and relationship priorities
- Apply UTM conventions and Google Analytics 4 campaign tracking to connect communications activity with web actions
- Design an AMEC-aligned measurement framework with outputs, outtakes, outcomes, KPIs and reporting cadence
- Produce a 90-day PESO campaign blueprint containing channel plans, governance roles, budget assumptions and optimisation actions

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Public Relations Managers — who need to integrate media relations with content, social and paid activity
- Corporate Communications Managers — who must coordinate reputation campaigns across multiple internal and external channels
- Digital Communications Managers — who need a structured role for owned, shared and earned media in campaign planning
- Marketing Managers — who need PR activity to support audience acquisition, trust and conversion objectives
- Media Relations Officers — who want to extend earned-media plans into measurable multi-channel programmes
- Social Media Managers — who need to connect community engagement and amplification to wider communications goals
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience contributing to PR, marketing, social media or corporate communications activity, including familiarity with campaign briefs, target audiences, key messages and basic social or web metrics. They should be comfortable working with spreadsheets and preparing simple presentation slides. A laptop is required for planning exercises and for reviewing sample dashboards and tracking links. Prior use of Google Analytics 4, Meltwater, CisionOne or Hootsuite is helpful but not required; guided examples are provided. No coding, media-buying qualification, advanced data-analysis skill or formal PR accreditation is required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short, applied briefings to introduce PESO decisions, followed by workshops in which participants map audiences, messages, channels, content and measurement against a campaign brief. Teams analyse examples of integrated launches, reputation responses and thought-leadership programmes, identifying where channel choices support or weaken the narrative. Participants build working artefacts each day in templates supplied by the instructor, receive structured peer and instructor critique, and consolidate them on day five into a 90-day application plan for a live or simulated communications challenge.
