Course overview
Food security teams must turn fragmented assessment, market, climate, programme and population data into decisions that can be explained to donors, government counterparts and operational leaders. Static spreadsheets and generic dashboards make it difficult to identify deteriorating consumption, geographic gaps, price shocks, beneficiary coverage or pipeline risk. This course equips practitioners to build Power BI dashboards that connect food security indicators with the operational questions behind targeting, prioritisation and response monitoring.
Participants learn to structure food security datasets, clean and combine sources with Power Query, create a usable star-schema data model, and write DAX measures for indicators such as Food Consumption Score, reduced Coping Strategy Index, household dietary diversity, market price change, caseload coverage and response reach. The course addresses disaggregation by geography, sex, age, livelihood zone and displacement status; map-based analysis; time-series monitoring; drill-through investigation; data quality controls; and secure publication through the Power BI Service.
Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by hands-on work using a realistic humanitarian food security data pack containing household survey records, market prices, population estimates, intervention data and administrative boundaries. Participants build an end-to-end Food Security Situation and Response Dashboard, including an executive landing page, subnational analysis pages, a market monitoring view and documented measures. They leave with a reusable Power BI template, a data model specification and an implementation plan for their own reporting environment.
The programme is designed for intermediate analysts and technical staff working in humanitarian response, development programmes, social protection, nutrition-linked food security work and government early-warning systems. It is equally valuable to managers who need to commission, review or govern dashboards used for resource allocation and operational decision-making.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable working with tabular data in Excel or CSV files, including filters, basic formulas, lookups and data validation. They should understand the purpose of common food security indicators such as Food Consumption Score, coping strategies, market prices, beneficiary reach and geographic disaggregation, although they do not need to calculate every indicator manually. Prior use of Power BI Desktop is helpful: attendees should know how to import a file and create a simple visual. DAX expertise, database administration, GIS programming, survey design and advanced statistics are not required.
Training methodology
Each day combines focused instructor-led Power BI demonstrations with guided build sessions using a humanitarian food security data pack. Participants work through household assessment, market-monitoring, response-reach and administrative-boundary files rather than generic sales data. Short case discussions test how visual choices can affect targeting and prioritisation decisions. Peer review sessions assess measure definitions, disaggregation logic and dashboard usability for programme managers. On the final day, participants adapt the dashboard design to an organisational use case and produce a practical implementation plan covering data owners, refresh frequency, access controls and quality checks.
