Public-sector databases often hold case files, licensing data, benefits records, regulatory evidence, correspondence metadata and operational transactions long after their immediate business use has ended. Teams must keep these records reliable, searchable and protected while applying retention schedules, disposal holds, access controls and audit requirements consistently. Poorly designed retention rules create two costly failures: information is destroyed before its authorised disposal date, or sensitive and obsolete data remains in live systems indefinitely, increasing disclosure, cyber-security and litigation risk.

This course equips participants to design and operate defensible database records and retention controls across public-sector environments. Participants examine how to distinguish records from transient data; map database entities and fields to business classifications; translate retention schedules into system rules; apply event-based retention triggers; manage legal holds; and document appraisal, transfer, archival and disposal decisions. Requirements and prerequisites

Frequently asked questions

You should be comfortable with relational database basics such as tables, keys, relationships and simple SQL queries. You do not need to be a database developer or know a specific records law, but experience with a retention schedule or information-governance process will help.
