Course overview

Relativity administrators are expected to keep review environments secure, responsive and defensible while legal teams work against immovable production deadlines. Poorly configured workspaces, inconsistent permissions, uncontrolled field changes and weak quality-control processes can expose privileged material, delay review and make it difficult to explain how evidence was handled. This five-day course prepares legal operations and eDiscovery professionals to administer Relativity with the discipline required for active investigations, litigation and regulatory matters.

Participants work through the administrative functions used to create and maintain matter workspaces in Relativity. They configure clients, matters, users, groups and item-level security; build fields, choices, layouts, views and searches; manage batches and reviewer workflows; and apply audit, error-triage and quality-control methods. The course also addresses processing and imaging administration, data-transfer considerations, permissions troubleshooting, workspace templates and repeatable operating procedures. Participants learn to translate a matter protocol into an operational Relativity configuration that supports legal review without granting unnecessary access.

Delivery combines instructor demonstrations with guided configuration labs in a Relativity training environment and a multi-stage case file. Each day adds a new administrative requirement to the same matter, from secure workspace design through production readiness. By the final session, participants produce a documented workspace administration pack: a configuration checklist, group-permission matrix, field and layout design, review workflow, QC plan and issue log. This gives both the participant and their manager a practical artefact for applying the course methods to live matters.

The course is best suited to professionals who already understand the broad eDiscovery lifecycle and now need hands-on responsibility for Relativity workspace administration, review support or legal technology operations.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Configure Relativity clients, matters and workspaces using a documented matter-intake checklist
  • Create users, groups and permission models that enforce least-privilege document access
  • Build fields, choices, layouts and views aligned to a review protocol and coding plan
  • Design saved searches, persistent highlights and search-term reports for reviewer workflows
  • Set up batches, reviewer assignments and coding-quality controls for managed document review
  • Administer processing, imaging and native-file settings while tracking exceptions and errors
  • Use audit records and workspace reports to investigate access, coding and configuration issues
  • Produce a workspace administration pack containing a permission matrix, QC plan and handover log

Benefits of attending

Who should attend

  • Relativity Administrators — who configure and support secure matter workspaces for legal teams
  • eDiscovery Analysts — who prepare data, searches and review environments for investigations and litigation
  • Litigation Support Specialists — who translate case-team requirements into operational review workflows
  • Legal Operations Managers — who need consistent workspace controls and measurable review processes
  • Document Review Managers — who manage reviewer access, batches, coding consistency and escalation routes
  • Information Governance Professionals — who support defensible handling of electronically stored information

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical familiarity with the eDiscovery lifecycle, including preservation, collection, processing, review and production, and should understand common document-review concepts such as custodians, metadata, privilege, responsive coding and productions. Experience using Relativity as a reviewer, case manager or support analyst is strongly recommended; participants should be comfortable navigating workspaces, running searches and interpreting document fields. No programming, SQL administration or prior Relativity system-administrator certification is required. The course teaches workspace administration rather than server installation, database maintenance or infrastructure sizing.

Training methodology

An instructor leads short technical briefings, demonstrates each function in a Relativity training environment, and then coaches participants through guided configuration tasks. The course uses a single litigation scenario so that users, permissions, fields, searches, batches and QC controls are built in sequence rather than as isolated features. Participants compare configuration decisions in small groups, diagnose deliberately introduced access and workflow problems, and maintain an administration log. The final workshop converts the completed workspace into a handover-ready operating plan for a live-matter equivalent.

Course outline

Day 1: Secure workspace foundations

  • Relativity architecture, application roles and workspace administration scope
  • Client, matter and workspace hierarchy
  • Matter-intake requirements and workspace naming conventions
  • User accounts, groups and authentication considerations
  • Workspace, document and item-level security permissions
  • Permission inheritance and least-privilege design
  • Administrative audit records and configuration documentation

Workshop: Participants create a new matter workspace and produce a group-permission matrix for an outside counsel, client and review-team scenario.

Day 2: Data model and reviewer interface configuration

  • Field types, object types and field governance
  • Choice fields, multi-choice fields and hierarchical choices
  • Associative objects and coding relationships
  • Layouts, categories and required-field design
  • Views, column sets and document-list usability
  • Saved searches and search-condition logic
  • Persistent highlights, keyword expansion and search-term reporting

Workshop: Participants configure a responsive, privilege and issue-coding model, then build the layout, views and saved searches required by a review protocol.

Day 3: Review workflow, batching and quality control

  • Document review workflow mapping from protocol to Relativity
  • Batch creation methods and batch-set configuration
  • Reviewer assignment, batch permissions and workload balancing
  • Propagation, mass operations and coding-change controls
  • Sampling methods for first-pass and privilege QC
  • Pivot profiles, dashboard reports and review-progress monitoring
