Course overview

Store and regional managers are expected to deliver sales, availability, service and labour targets while leading teams through daily operational pressure. The challenge is not simply knowing retail KPIs; it is translating them into clear priorities, effective coaching, disciplined routines and timely interventions across different stores, shifts and team capabilities. This course helps managers move from reactive problem-solving to consistent retail leadership that improves execution at the shop floor.

Participants learn how to interpret a store scorecard, identify the operational drivers behind sales and customer results, and set focused weekly priorities. They practise structured shift huddles, performance conversations, coaching observations, delegation, rota decisions and escalation methods. The course also addresses leading through change, handling underperformance fairly, building accountable store cultures and managing communication between head office, regional teams and store colleagues.

The programme is delivered through retail trading cases, KPI analysis workshops, role-played coaching conversations and group planning exercises. Participants work with realistic data on conversion, average transaction value, units per transaction, labour productivity, availability, shrink and customer feedback. They leave with a practical 30-day Store Leadership Action Plan, including their team communication rhythm, coaching priorities, selected KPIs, risk actions and an implementation schedule they can use immediately with their line manager.

It is designed for current and aspiring store, area and regional leaders in fashion, grocery, speciality, convenience, department store and multi-site retail. It is equally valuable for managers taking responsibility for a larger branch portfolio or moving from high individual performance into people leadership.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret a retail scorecard to identify the sales, service, availability and labour drivers requiring management action
  • Run structured daily huddles using trading priorities, role allocation and measurable shift commitments
  • Conduct evidence-based coaching conversations using observation notes, questioning and agreed follow-up actions
  • Create a weekly store action plan that links commercial targets to floor routines and named accountabilities
  • Use conversion, average transaction value and units per transaction data to diagnose trading performance
  • Apply a fair underperformance process using documented expectations, feedback checkpoints and support actions
  • Build a RACI matrix for store-to-region responsibilities during operational change or campaign execution

Who should attend

  • Store Managers — who must convert trading targets into consistent team execution
  • Assistant Store Managers — who are preparing to lead shifts, teams and store performance
  • Area Managers — who need a repeatable method for coaching and challenging multiple store leaders
  • Regional Managers — who must align store portfolios around commercial priorities and operating standards
  • Department Managers — who lead customer-facing teams and own category, service or availability results
  • Retail Operations Managers — who need stronger field leadership routines during operational change

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have basic experience of working in a retail store, branch or multi-site retail environment and be familiar with common measures such as sales target, conversion, customer service score, labour hours and stock availability. Current leadership experience is helpful but not essential; aspiring supervisors and newly appointed managers can attend. Participants should be comfortable reading simple tables and charts and discussing workplace scenarios. No formal leadership qualification, HR certification, Power BI expertise or advanced Excel skills are required. Complete beginners should expect practical retail terminology and leadership foundations before progressing to performance diagnosis and coaching practice.

Training methodology

An experienced retail leadership facilitator leads short, applied sessions built around the rhythm of a trading week. Participants analyse store scorecards in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power BI, identify root causes from operational evidence, and practise huddles, floor observations and corrective conversations in role plays. Small groups work through a multi-store case involving labour pressure, falling conversion and availability issues. Each day ends with a workplace application task, and the final session converts learning into a reviewed 30-day Store Leadership Action Plan.

Course outline

Day 1: The retail leader's commercial operating rhythm

  • The store manager's role in connecting customer experience, people and commercial performance
  • Retail scorecard structure for sales, conversion, average transaction value and units per transaction

  • Store walk routines for identifying service, merchandising and availability barriers
  • Daily huddle design using priorities, role allocation and shift commitments
  • SMART target setting for store teams and individual colleagues

Day 2: Coaching teams on the shop floor

Day 3: Managing performance, labour and operational discipline

  • Diagnosing performance gaps using sales, labour, availability and customer feedback data

Day 4: Leading across stores and through change

  • Regional-to-store communication cascades and message consistency
  • RACI matrix design for promotional launches and operational change
  • Prioritising field visits using store risk, opportunity and capability indicators

  • Balancing customer, colleague, commercial and compliance measures
  • Using Microsoft Power BI dashboards to identify exceptions and trends
  • Action tracking with owners, deadlines, measures and escalation points
  • Building psychological safety alongside non-negotiable operating standards

No. The course suits assistant managers, department managers and supervisors preparing for broader leadership responsibility, as well as current store and area managers. Participants need familiarity with a retail environment and its basic performance measures.

A laptop is useful for live online delivery and helpful in the classroom if you wish to work with the supplied scorecard templates. Exercises use straightforward tables, charts and dashboard views; advanced Excel formulas or Power BI build skills are not required.

This programme uses retail trading rhythms, store scorecards, labour deployment, availability, shrink and customer interactions as the basis for leadership practice. Participants work on the practical decisions that store and regional leaders make during a trading week.
