Course overview
Retailers invest heavily in loyalty schemes, CRM platforms, promotional offers and customer data, yet many programmes produce low active-member rates, margin-eroding discounts and limited evidence of incremental sales. Marketing teams need to distinguish enrolment from genuine loyalty, identify which customer behaviours create value, and design communications and rewards that change purchasing patterns without training customers to wait for offers. This course addresses the practical decisions behind a profitable retail loyalty programme: who to target, what to offer, when to communicate and how to measure commercial impact.
Participants learn to build a retail loyalty strategy around customer value, shopping missions and channel behaviour. They segment customers using RFM analysis, customer lifetime value and propensity indicators; map customer journeys across store, e-commerce and mobile touchpoints; and design member propositions, tiers, rewards and triggered campaigns. The course also covers first-party data capture, consent management, campaign test design, retail marketing dashboards and the measurement of retention, frequency, basket value, redemption, incremental revenue and return on loyalty investment.
Delivery combines instructor-led retail examples with spreadsheet analysis, campaign-design workshops and group critique. Participants work from a realistic omnichannel retailer dataset to produce a loyalty programme blueprint: a defined target segment, value proposition, reward mechanics, customer journey, campaign calendar, KPI scorecard and 90-day implementation plan. This gives both the participant and their manager a practical document that can be adapted to an existing programme or used to scope a new one.
The course is suited to foundation-to-intermediate marketing professionals working in grocery, fashion, beauty, specialty retail, department stores, convenience, e-commerce and omnichannel retail businesses. It is particularly valuable where teams need to make better use of loyalty, CRM and transaction data while protecting margin and customer trust.

- Retail Marketing Managers — who need to improve loyalty performance without relying on blanket discounting
- CRM and Loyalty Managers — who design member communications, rewards and retention activity
- Customer Experience Managers — who coordinate consistent member experiences across physical and digital channels
- E-commerce and Digital Marketing Managers — who use behavioural data to increase repeat online purchasing
- Category and Commercial Managers — who need loyalty insights to shape promotions, assortment and supplier-funded offers
- Retail Data and Insights Analysts — who translate transaction and member data into actionable customer segments
Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable discussing basic retail measures such as sales, margin, units, average transaction value and conversion, and should have some awareness of how their organisation communicates with customers through email, apps, stores or e-commerce. Familiarity with Excel tables and simple formulas is useful because exercises use customer and transaction data. No prior experience of loyalty-programme design, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Power BI, Google Analytics 4 or statistical modelling is required. Complete beginners should expect a practical introduction to retail CRM terminology, metrics and decision methods before progressing to campaign and measurement work.
Training methodology
The instructor uses retail cases, short demonstrations and facilitated discussion to connect loyalty decisions to margin, customer behaviour and channel operations. Participants analyse anonymised transaction and member data in Excel, develop segments and KPIs, and review dashboard examples in Power BI. Small groups design a loyalty proposition and lifecycle campaign for a retail scenario, then defend their choices against commercial constraints. Each day adds a section to an individual loyalty blueprint, culminating in peer review and a practical 90-day application plan.
