Multi-store retailers lose margin and customer loyalty when operating standards are interpreted differently by each branch, replenishment signals arrive too late, labour plans do not match demand, and exception reporting hides recurring causes. Store and regional leaders need more than daily task control: they need a repeatable operating system that connects sales, availability, labour, shrink, service and compliance measures to accountable action. This course addresses the practical challenge of improving network performance without creating unmanageable reporting or one-size-fits-all store directives.
Participants learn to design, measure and govern retail operating routines across a store estate. They work with store scorecards, balanced KPI trees, sales and labour productivity measures, on-shelf availability, stock accuracy, shrink indicators, queue and service measures, and compliance audit results. The course shows how to set targets, segment stores fairly, identify performance variance, conduct root-cause analysis, run corrective-action reviews, and translate central operating policies into executable store routines. Participants also practise demand-led labour planning, replenishment escalation, visual management and structured continuous-improvement methods.
Teaching combines instructor-led retail operations models with data-based workshops, realistic case studies and peer review of operating decisions. Participants use Excel and Power BI templates to analyse a simulated store network, distinguish symptoms from causes, and prioritise interventions by value and feasibility. Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in a retail store, area, regional, merchandising, replenishment or retail-operations role, and should understand common measures such as sales, margin, stock, labour hours, conversion and shrink. Comfort working with tables, filters and basic formulas in Microsoft Excel is expected; participants will analyse operational data and build simple performance views. Familiarity with Power BI is helpful but not required, as the course focuses on interpreting dashboards rather than advanced report development. No statistical qualification, coding knowledge or prior Lean certification is required. Participants should bring examples of their own store KPIs or operating challenges where organisational policy permits.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led briefings followed by applied analysis of a simulated retail network. Participants work in groups to interpret store scorecards, clean and compare operational data in Excel, review Power BI dashboards, and decide where field-management time should be deployed. Case discussions cover availability failures, labour mismatches, shrink exceptions and inconsistent audit results. Facilitated role-play develops the discipline of a weekly trading review, including challenge, escalation and action ownership.
