Course overview
Retail sales teams are expected to increase basket value without making customers feel pressured, overlooked or sold the wrong product. The challenge is especially acute where colleagues must balance conversion, speed of service, stock availability, loyalty targets, promotional rules and a consistent brand experience. This course addresses the practical judgement behind profitable upselling and cross-selling: identifying a relevant need, recommending an appropriate solution, handling hesitation and closing the added sale while protecting customer trust.
Participants learn a repeatable retail conversation framework for moving from discovery questions to tailored recommendations. They analyse customer missions, distinguish complementary cross-sell opportunities from premium upsell opportunities, use product knowledge to explain value, and build recommendations around bundles, warranties, accessories, services and loyalty offers. The programme also covers customer segmentation, basket analysis, visual prompts, point-of-sale messaging, objection handling, ethical selling boundaries and measurement of attachment rate, average transaction value and units per transaction.
Delivery combines instructor-led retail sales clinics with role plays, till-side conversation simulations, product-bundle workshops and analysis of realistic point-of-sale data in Microsoft Excel and Power BI. Participants practise with retail scenarios such as apparel fitting rooms, consumer electronics, grocery promotions and service counters. They leave with an individual Retail Upsell and Cross-Sell Playbook containing their discovery questions, recommendation scripts, objection responses, product-pairing map, KPI scorecard and a 30-day workplace implementation plan.
The course is designed for experienced retail sales professionals and supervisors who already understand basic customer service and now need to improve commercial conversations, coach consistent selling behaviour or raise attachment and basket-value performance across a store, department or channel.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have at least six months of customer-facing retail experience or experience supervising retail sales colleagues. They should already be comfortable with basic service conversations, product features and benefits, common promotional mechanics, and the core measures of sales, conversion and average transaction value. Familiarity with a point-of-sale system and basic Microsoft Excel is useful because the course includes basket-data exercises; advanced spreadsheet skills are not required. Participants should bring examples of their product categories, current offers and typical customer objections. No previous formal sales qualification, CRM expertise or Power BI experience is required.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led modules followed by retail-specific practice. Participants work with anonymised POS basket data in Microsoft Excel and Power BI, identify attachable product categories, and test recommendations against customer needs, stock constraints and promotion rules. Role plays use timed shop-floor, fitting-room and service-desk scenarios, with peer and instructor feedback against a sales observation rubric. Small groups build category bundle maps and manager coaching routines. On the final day, each participant completes and reviews a 30-day implementation plan for their store or department.
