Course overview

Business users and analysts often receive reports that are slow to build, inconsistent across teams, or dependent on IT to interpret database structures. SAP BusinessObjects addresses this gap through a governed reporting environment built on semantic layers, universes and reusable business objects. This five-day course equips participants to turn operational data into trusted Web Intelligence and Crystal Reports outputs while maintaining consistent definitions for measures, dimensions, filters and calculations.

Participants learn the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform architecture, the role of the universe as a semantic layer, and the reporting workflow from data connection to published document. They build queries in Web Intelligence, create variables and report calculations, use input controls and drill features, design charts and tables, and apply report formatting standards. The course also covers universe design in the Information Design Tool, including data foundations, business layers, joins, contexts, lists of values, security-aware objects and validation.

Instruction combines guided demonstrations with structured lab work using a realistic sales, customer and finance reporting scenario. Participants configure a universe, create governed business objects, and use that universe to produce interactive Web Intelligence reports and a formatted Crystal Report. They leave with a practical reporting pack: a documented mini-universe, reusable query objects, two interactive reports, one operational report layout and a deployment checklist for their own reporting environment.

The course is suited to report developers, BI analysts, data professionals and application teams responsible for delivering reliable self-service reporting from SAP BusinessObjects. It also gives managers a clear basis for standardising report development and reducing duplicated data logic.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should be comfortable using Windows, working with spreadsheets and interpreting basic business data such as sales, dates, customers and financial measures. Familiarity with relational database concepts—tables, columns, primary keys, joins and SQL SELECT statements—is helpful, especially for the semantic-layer modules, but advanced SQL is not required. Prior SAP BusinessObjects experience is not required; this course starts with platform navigation and report creation before progressing to universe design. A complete beginner should expect to work through guided exercises and should be prepared to use both Web Intelligence and Information Design Tool during the week.

Training methodology

Each day alternates instructor-led demonstrations with hands-on SAP BusinessObjects labs. Participants work from a shared business scenario containing sales, customer, product and finance data, first consuming a universe and then designing one in Information Design Tool. Exercises require participants to build Web Intelligence queries, calculations and interactive report controls, followed by Crystal Reports layouts for operational distribution. Facilitated review sessions compare design decisions, query results and report usability. The final workshop converts the completed reporting pack into an application plan for the participant’s own data sources, audiences and governance requirements.

Day 2: Web Intelligence analysis and report design

Day 3: Semantic layer design with Information Design Tool
