Course overview
SAP S/4HANA Finance configuration decisions determine whether postings are controlled correctly, financial statements are reliable, and month-end close can be completed without manual workarounds. Finance professionals moving from business-process roles into system ownership need to understand how the chart of accounts, company code settings, posting controls, tax, reconciliation accounts, payment processes, and asset accounting work together. This course addresses the practical gap between knowing accounting requirements and translating them into defendable SAP configuration choices.
Participants configure core SAP S/4HANA Finance Accounting functions using the implementation guide and Fiori applications. They learn to establish enterprise structures; define global and operating charts of accounts; create G/L account groups and field-status controls; configure fiscal year variants, posting periods, document types, and tolerances; set up customer, supplier, bank, tax, and payment settings; and maintain key Asset Accounting structures. The course also explains configuration dependencies, transport considerations, integration points with controlling and logistics, and the controls needed for accurate financial reporting.
Delivery combines instructor demonstrations with guided system exercises based on a multi-entity business scenario. Participants make configuration decisions, test postings, diagnose common errors, and review the resulting accounting documents and reports. By the end of the week, each participant leaves with a completed SAP S/4HANA Finance configuration workbook containing settings, rationale, test cases, posting results, and a practical checklist for applying the approach in a project, support, or finance transformation role.
The course is suited to finance systems professionals, accountants supporting SAP implementations, and functional consultants who need a structured foundation before taking responsibility for Finance configuration or process design.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Configure enterprise structure elements including company codes, business areas, segments, and assignments.
- Design a chart of accounts structure with account groups, retained earnings accounts, and G/L master controls.
- Set fiscal year variants, posting period variants, document types, number ranges, and field-status groups.
- Configure customer and supplier reconciliation accounts, payment terms, dunning procedures, and tolerance groups.
- Set up tax procedures, tax codes, and account determination for controlled tax postings.
- Configure bank master data, house banks, payment methods, and the automatic payment program.
- Maintain Asset Accounting settings including chart of depreciation, asset classes, depreciation areas, and account determination.
- Execute configuration test scripts and document a traceable Finance configuration workbook.
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build evidence of practical SAP S/4HANA Finance configuration capability through a completed configuration workbook.
- Explain how accounting policy requirements translate into company-code, G/L, tax, payment, and asset settings.
- Troubleshoot common posting failures by tracing configuration dependencies and account determination.
- Contribute more credibly to fit-to-standard workshops, configuration reviews, and user-acceptance testing.
- Prepare for Finance functional consultant, financial systems analyst, or SAP implementation support responsibilities.
For your organisation
- Reduce configuration rework by giving staff a structured method for documenting settings, dependencies, and test evidence.
- Improve posting accuracy through stronger controls over document types, field status, tolerances, tax, and reconciliation accounts.
- Shorten issue resolution time by enabling support staff to isolate configuration causes of Finance posting errors.
- Strengthen implementation governance with staff who can challenge incomplete requirements and assess cross-module impacts.
- Create reusable Finance configuration and test artifacts that support upgrades, audits, handovers, and future rollouts.
Target competencies
Who should attend
- SAP Finance Functional Consultants — who need to configure and test core S/4HANA Finance Accounting processes
- Financial Systems Analysts — who translate finance requirements into SAP settings and controlled process changes
- Finance Transformation Project Team Members — who support design workshops, fit-to-standard decisions, and system testing
- Senior Accountants — who need to validate posting controls, master data, and close-process configuration
- SAP Support Analysts — who investigate Finance posting issues and maintain approved configuration changes
- ERP Implementation Managers — who need to assess Finance design dependencies, testing scope, and delivery risks
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand double-entry accounting, including debits and credits, general ledger accounts, accounts receivable, accounts payable, tax postings, and period-end close. Familiarity with SAP navigation, master data, or an ERP finance module is helpful but not mandatory. Participants should be able to read a basic financial statement and explain the purpose of a company code, chart of accounts, customer, and supplier. No programming, ABAP, prior SAP configuration experience, or prior S/4HANA certification is required. Complete beginners should expect a demanding but supported introduction to both Finance process logic and configuration terminology.
Training methodology
The instructor leads short configuration briefings followed by guided work in SAP S/4HANA Finance using a continuing multi-company case. Participants configure settings in the implementation guide and relevant Fiori applications, then post transactions to verify the accounting effect. Case discussions examine controls, configuration dependencies, and common production defects such as blocked postings, incorrect tax determination, or failed payment proposals. Small groups review design choices against business requirements. On Day 5, participants consolidate their settings, test evidence, and application actions into a Finance configuration workbook.
