Course overview

Supply chain teams often work around disconnected material plans, late procurement signals, unreliable available-to-promise dates, and warehouse or transport exceptions that are visible only after customer service is affected. SAP S/4HANA brings planning and execution data into connected business processes, but users need more than transaction familiarity to make sound decisions. This course equips participants to trace how demand, supply, inventory, production, purchasing, warehousing, and delivery commitments interact in the S/4HANA environment.

Participants work through the operational planning cycle from demand and material requirements planning through procurement, production supply, inventory movements, outbound delivery, and transport execution. They learn to interpret MRP results, manage exceptions, maintain planning parameters, evaluate stock and requirements lists, check product availability, process purchase requisitions and purchase orders, and monitor execution using SAP Fiori applications. The course also examines how embedded Extended Warehouse Management and Transportation Management support controlled goods movement and delivery fulfilment.

Instruction combines expert-led demonstrations with guided exercises in a training SAP S/4HANA system. Participants use a realistic manufacturing and distribution scenario to turn sales demand into planned supply, resolve material shortages, release procurement and production actions, execute warehouse activities, and monitor delivery progress. Each participant leaves with a completed supply chain process workbook containing planning decisions, exception-resolution evidence, key Fiori apps used, and a practical action plan for applying the methods in their own role.

The course is designed for professionals who already work with procurement, planning, manufacturing, inventory, warehouse, or logistics processes and need a connected view of how SAP S/4HANA supports end-to-end supply chain control. Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should understand core supply chain concepts such as demand, inventory, lead time, bills of material, purchase orders, goods receipts, production orders, and customer deliveries. Practical experience in at least one procurement, planning, manufacturing, warehouse, or logistics role is expected. Familiarity with SAP navigation, master data, and basic transactional processing is useful; prior use of SAP ECC or SAP S/4HANA is an advantage. Participants do not need ABAP programming, SAP configuration experience, implementation project experience, or prior knowledge of SAP Integrated Business Planning. The course focuses on informed operational use of SAP S/4HANA rather than technical system build.

Training methodology

The course uses instructor-led process walkthroughs, live SAP S/4HANA demonstrations, and guided individual exercises in a configured training environment. Each day extends a single manufacturing and distribution case: participants review demand, run MRP, resolve shortages, create supply documents, execute goods movements, and track deliveries. Small-group discussions compare alternative responses to constrained supply, late suppliers, and inventory discrepancies. The final session includes an application-planning workshop in which participants map course methods, Fiori apps, and exception controls to a current process in their organisation.

Course outline

Day 1: Supply chain process integration in SAP S/4HANA

• End-to-end demand-to-delivery process map in SAP S/4HANA
• SAP Fiori launchpad roles, spaces, pages, and operational app navigation
• Organisational structures for plants, storage locations, purchasing organisations, and shipping points
• Material master views and their effect on planning and execution
• Business partner roles in supplier and customer supply chain processes
• Stock types, special stocks, and inventory visibility concepts
• Core supply chain documents and status flow from requirement to delivery

Workshop: Participants map a supplied product flow to the relevant S/4HANA organisational units, master data objects, documents, and Fiori apps.

Day 2: Material requirements planning and supply exceptions

• Demand sources from sales orders, planned independent requirements, and dependent requirements
• MRP types, reorder point planning, consumption-based planning, and MRP areas
• Lot-sizing procedures, safety stock, planning time fence, and lead-time scheduling
• Planning file entries and the MRP run in SAP S/4HANA
• Planned orders, purchase requisitions, and stock transfer requisitions as MRP outputs
• Stock/Requirements List analysis and exception-message prioritisation
• Rescheduling proposals and shortage-resolution decision rules

Workshop: Participants run MRP for a product portfolio, analyse the resulting exceptions, and produce a prioritised shortage-resolution list.

Day 3: Procurement, production supply, and availability control

• Source determination using source lists, purchasing info records, and quota arrangements
• Conversion of purchase requisitions into purchase orders
• Purchase order confirmations, delivery dates, tolerances, and follow-up actions
• Inbound delivery processing and goods receipt posting
• Planned order conversion and production order material staging
• Reservations, backflush concepts, and inventory postings for production supply
• Available-to-promise checking, confirmed quantities, and delivery-date commitments

Workshop: Participants convert MRP proposals into supplier and production supply documents, then resolve an ATP shortfall for a priority customer order.

Day 4: Warehouse, delivery, and transportation execution

• Inbound delivery status management and warehouse receiving sequence
• Embedded SAP Extended Warehouse Management warehouse requests and warehouse tasks
• Putaway, picking, packing, and physical inventory process controls
• Outbound delivery creation, picking status, and post goods issue
• Batch, serial number, and handling unit traceability in fulfilment
• Embedded SAP Transportation Management freight units and freight orders
• Delivery monitoring and exception escalation across warehouse and transport operations

Workshop: Participants process an inbound receipt and an outbound customer delivery, recording the warehouse and transport exceptions that require escalation.

Day 5: Operational monitoring and supply chain decision making

• Role-based Fiori apps for material coverage, procurement, production, and delivery monitoring
• Key performance indicators for material availability, inventory, supplier reliability, and fulfilment
• Root-cause analysis for recurring MRP exceptions and late delivery signals
• Master-data governance for planning parameters, lead times, and sourcing data
• Cross-functional escalation routines and exception ownership
• SAP S/4HANA operational planning compared with SAP Integrated Business Planning responsibilities
• Personal application planning for process improvement and user adoption

Workshop: Participants complete an end-to-end case review and produce a supply chain action plan with exception owners, SAP evidence, and improvement recommendations.
