Course overview
Many marketing teams collect customer data but struggle to turn it into a defensible targeting decision. Campaigns are often planned around broad demographics, product preferences or internal assumptions, resulting in generic messaging, poorly prioritised media spend and sales teams pursuing prospects with limited fit. The STP framework—Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning—provides a disciplined way to identify meaningful customer groups, select the segments an organisation can serve profitably, and define a market position that gives buyers a clear reason to choose.
This five-day course teaches participants to apply STP from research brief to activation plan. Participants assess markets using demographic, geographic, behavioural, needs-based and value-based variables; construct segment profiles; test segment attractiveness with scoring criteria; select target-market strategies; and write positioning statements grounded in customer needs and competitive evidence. They use perceptual maps, customer personas, value propositions and message hierarchies to connect segmentation decisions to campaign planning, content, channels and sales enablement.
Instruction combines concise framework teaching with practical analysis of a realistic market case and participants' own business context. Working in teams, participants interpret survey, CRM and web-behaviour data, build a segmentation matrix in Excel, compare target segments, and challenge positioning choices against competitors. Each participant leaves with an STP decision pack: a segment definition set, segment-attractiveness scorecard, priority target recommendation, persona, perceptual map, positioning statement and 90-day activation plan that can be refined with their manager after the course.
The course suits marketing professionals, product teams and customer-facing commercial roles that need a common, evidence-led basis for deciding whom to serve, what to say and where to invest. It is appropriate for organisations launching offers, entering new markets, revising brand positioning or improving campaign relevance.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define customer segments using demographic, behavioural, needs-based and value-based variables
- Build a segmentation matrix from survey, CRM and digital-behaviour data
- Create evidence-based segment profiles, including needs, barriers, buying triggers and channel preferences
- Evaluate segment attractiveness using a weighted market potential, accessibility, fit and profitability scorecard
- Select differentiated, concentrated or undifferentiated target-market strategies for a defined market objective
- Construct perceptual maps to assess competitive positions and whitespace opportunities
- Write positioning statements and value propositions using a target, frame of reference, benefit and reason-to-believe structure
- Produce an STP decision pack linking segment priorities to campaign messages, channels, measures and a 90-day action plan

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require prior formal marketing training. Participants should be comfortable discussing customers, products, competitors and commercial objectives, and should have basic experience using spreadsheets to read tables, sort data and apply simple calculations. Familiarity with concepts such as customer journey, campaign, value proposition or market research is helpful but not assumed. A laptop with Microsoft Excel or equivalent spreadsheet software is strongly recommended for the practical workshops. Statistical modelling, coding, advanced analytics software and previous segmentation-project experience are not required. Complete beginners should expect a structured introduction before progressing to applied decisions.
Training methodology
The course is delivered through instructor-led explanation, worked examples and progressive workshops built around a realistic market-entry case. Participants analyse sample survey, CRM and Google Analytics data in Excel, then apply the same templates to a selected product, service or business unit from their own context. Small-group reviews test segment definitions, scorecards and positioning choices against competitor evidence. Facilitated critique is used to improve assumptions and make recommendations defensible. On the final day, participants assemble their STP decision pack and create a 90-day application plan for workplace use.
