Course overview
Digital marketing teams often inherit broad audiences, channel metrics and campaign briefs without a defensible answer to three commercial questions: which customers differ meaningfully, which groups deserve investment, and what promise should the brand own in each market. The result is generic creative, inefficient media spend, competing offers and reports that describe clicks rather than customer choice. This course gives marketers a disciplined STP process for turning first-party data, research and market signals into segment definitions, target-market decisions and position statements that guide campaign planning.
Participants work through segmentation bases including behavioural, needs-based, value-based, firmographic, demographic, geographic and psychographic variables. They learn to build usable segment hypotheses; analyse audience data in GA4, CRM and advertising platforms; create segment profiles and personas; size and score opportunities; select target strategies; map competitors; define points of parity and difference; and write positioning statements, value propositions and message hierarchies. The programme also addresses digital activation, showing how strategic segments translate into audiences, exclusions, lifecycle triggers, content themes and channel plans.
Instructor-led teaching combines practical frameworks with structured analysis of realistic market data and campaign scenarios. Participants use templates for segmentation design, target-market scoring, perceptual mapping, positioning and activation planning, then receive challenge and feedback from the instructor and peers. Each participant leaves with an STP strategy pack for a live brand, product line or business case: a segment architecture, prioritised target matrix, positioning platform, audience activation plan and measurement recommendations suitable for stakeholder review.
The course is designed for experienced marketers, growth professionals, product marketers and customer teams who need to make sharper audience and proposition decisions. It is particularly valuable for organisations launching offers, entering new markets, rebuilding customer acquisition programmes or aligning brand, product, sales and performance marketing teams around the same priority customers.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design a segmentation framework using behavioural, needs-based, value-based and firmographic variables
- Analyse GA4, CRM and campaign data to identify actionable audience patterns
- Build evidence-based segment profiles with needs, barriers, value potential and channel behaviours
- Score segment attractiveness using market size, growth, accessibility, strategic fit and profitability criteria
- Select differentiated, concentrated or multi-segment targeting strategies using a target-priority matrix
- Create perceptual maps that identify competitor positions, points of parity and whitespace opportunities
- Write positioning statements, value propositions and message hierarchies for priority segments
- Produce an STP activation plan linking segments to digital audiences, channels, content and measurement

- Brand Managers — who must establish a distinct market position across products, campaigns and customer touchpoints
- Product Marketing Managers — who translate product capabilities into segment-specific value propositions and launch plans
- Growth and Performance Marketing Leads — who need better audience prioritisation beyond platform targeting settings
- CRM and Lifecycle Marketing Managers — who design customer cohorts, triggers and retention programmes
- Marketing Analysts and Insights Specialists — who turn customer and campaign data into decisions for marketing teams
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have working experience in digital marketing, brand, product marketing, CRM, customer insight or campaign planning. They should understand basic marketing funnel concepts, common digital channels, campaign objectives and standard metrics such as conversion rate, customer acquisition cost and return on ad spend. Familiarity with spreadsheets and the ability to interpret simple tables or charts is expected. Access to a laptop is required for workshop activities. Prior use of GA4, CRM platforms or advertising managers is helpful but not essential; the course teaches their relevance to STP rather than advanced platform administration. No statistical modelling, coding or formal market-research qualification is required.
Training methodology
The five days alternate concise instructor-led explanation with applied STP workshops. Participants analyse a running business case and, where appropriate, their own organisation’s market, using sample GA4, CRM and campaign extracts to test segment hypotheses. Small groups critique segment definitions, target scores and positioning choices against evidence and competitor activity. The instructor demonstrates each template before participants complete it, then provides structured feedback. The final day is an STP review board in which participants present their strategy pack, receive peer challenge and create a 90-day implementation plan.
