Course overview

Senior leaders must make consequential choices while information is incomplete, stakeholder expectations conflict and conditions change faster than annual planning cycles. Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity can produce delayed decisions, scattered priorities, overconfident forecasts and communication that either creates alarm or conceals material risk. The professional task is not to predict every disruption; it is to build disciplined ways to sense change, test assumptions, make proportionate decisions and adjust course without losing strategic intent.

This course develops the strategic thinking and leadership practices required for uncertain conditions. Participants use VUCA, Cynefin, PESTLE, scenario planning, OODA loops, premortem analysis, RAPID decision roles and ISO 31000 risk principles. They learn to distinguish complicated from complex challenges, convert external signals into decision-relevant intelligence, frame choices and trade-offs, create plausible scenarios, set trigger points, and lead teams through ambiguity. Particular attention is given to decision quality, organisational resilience, stakeholder communication, adaptive teams and change commitment.

Teaching combines concise instructor briefings with sector-based cases, facilitated group analysis, decision simulations and structured peer challenge. Cases can reflect public services, banking, infrastructure, humanitarian operations, regulated industries and multinational business units. Participants apply each method to a live strategic issue or a realistic case, receiving feedback on assumptions, evidence, choices and communication. They leave with a Strategic Uncertainty Brief, scenario matrix, decision log, risk and trigger register, stakeholder communication cadence and 90-day action plan. A certificate of completion is issued to participants who complete the course.

The course is designed for experienced managers and leaders whose work involves strategic choices, cross-functional coordination, risk ownership, transformation or service continuity.

Participants can create team conditions that support challenge, learning and responsive delivery.

  • Psychological safety practices make challenge, admission and escalation speakable
  • After-action reviews capture expected results, actual results and corrective actions
  • Adaptive team charters define purpose, authority, interfaces and decision boundaries
  • Cross-functional huddles use visual management to resolve dependencies quickly
  • Delegation levels match authority to competence, risk and time sensitivity
  • Learning loops convert incidents, customer feedback and experiments into adjustments

Participants can sustain change commitment when assumptions, priorities and delivery plans change.

  • ADKAR diagnoses awareness, desire, knowledge, ability and reinforcement gaps
  • Change impact assessments identify process, role, technology and capability implications
  • Stakeholder commitment curves distinguish compliance, support, commitment and advocacy
  • Resistance analysis identifies losses, fears, incentives and unresolved operational concerns
  • Transition milestones sequence communications, training, pilots and reinforcement measures
  • Benefits hypotheses connect strategic change to measurable service and performance outcomes

How the course runs

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor briefings to introduce each framework, followed by facilitated case analysis, small-group work, decision simulations and peer challenge. Participants assess changing conditions, interpret weak signals, create scenarios, test strategic choices and respond to simulated disruptions. Cases are adapted to the cohort's sectors and decision contexts. Structured application planning links each method to a current workplace issue, with instructor feedback on evidence, assumptions, decision rights, risk treatment and stakeholder messaging.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have at least three years of management, programme, project, risk, operational or policy leadership experience. They should be familiar with planning cycles, performance measures, stakeholder management and making decisions through others. Experience of a current strategic issue, major change programme, disruption or complex operational challenge will help participants apply the methods directly. No prior study of VUCA, scenario planning, ISO 31000, finance, statistics or formal strategy frameworks is required. This is not an introductory people-management course; participants should already hold responsibility for decisions or advice that affects team, service, programme or business-unit outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

You should have several years of management, programme, operational, risk or policy leadership experience. Familiarity with planning, stakeholder management and organisational decision-making is assumed, but prior study of strategy or scenario planning is not required.

Bring a current strategic challenge, change initiative, major risk, service issue or decision that involves uncertainty. You will use it as an application context for selected templates and planning tools.

It suits senior managers, business-unit leaders, programme directors, transformation leaders and risk professionals with cross-functional responsibilities. It is particularly relevant where decisions affect services, investment, compliance, operations or stakeholder confidence.

General leadership courses commonly focus on people management, coaching and communication. This course concentrates on strategic judgment under uncertainty, including scenario design, risk treatment, decision architecture, resilience and adaptive action.

Participants leave with reusable templates and a 90-day action plan linked to a workplace issue. The methods can be used in strategy reviews, risk committees, programme boards, crisis planning, transformation meetings and executive briefings.

Each day runs from 08:30 to 16:30 and provides about 6.5 contact hours. The five days progress from sensemaking and strategic choice through scenarios, decisions, risk, communication, adaptive teams, change and workplace application.
