Course overview

Managers are often asked to convert broad leadership priorities into plans that departments can execute, yet many planning cycles produce long wish lists, unclear ownership, and measures that do not show whether the strategy is working. This course addresses the practical gap between organisational ambition and operational action. Participants learn how to define a planning horizon, assess the current position, make strategic choices, and communicate a focused plan that teams can use for decisions, budgeting, and performance reviews.

The course covers the core planning methods used in management teams: stakeholder and customer analysis, SWOT and PESTLE analysis, strategic issue identification, mission and vision statements, strategic objectives, Balanced Scorecard perspectives, KPIs, risk registers, initiative prioritisation, and implementation roadmaps. Participants practise distinguishing goals from strategies, outcomes from activities, and leading indicators from lagging measures. They gain a repeatable approach for turning evidence into a concise strategy map and an accountable delivery plan.

Instruction combines short expert-led sessions with structured workshops, realistic business cases, peer challenge sessions, and individual application to a live or representative business area. By the end of the week, each participant produces a strategic planning pack containing a situational assessment, strategic priorities, objectives, measures, initiatives, risk responses, governance arrangements, and a 90-day implementation plan. The pack can be refined with senior stakeholders after the course and used as a working document rather than a presentation-only artefact.

The programme is designed for managers who contribute to departmental, functional, business-unit, or programme plans and need a sound foundation before leading more complex enterprise strategy work.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Conduct a structured SWOT and PESTLE assessment to identify material strategic issues

Who should attend

  • Department Managers — who must translate organisational priorities into coordinated team plans
  • Functional Managers — who need to align service, operations, people, or commercial objectives with business strategy
  • Programme Managers — who need to connect strategic initiatives to measurable outcomes and governance decisions
  • Newly Appointed Senior Managers — who are expected to contribute credible plans during annual or quarterly planning cycles
  • Business Unit Leaders — who need a disciplined method for setting priorities, allocating resources, and tracking delivery
  • Project and Portfolio Managers — who must assess whether proposed work supports agreed strategic objectives

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have experience managing a team, function, project, or operational area and should understand their organisation’s basic structure, customers, services, and performance measures. Familiarity with routine business planning, budgets, or departmental KPIs is helpful because exercises use practical management scenarios. Participants should be able to work with simple tables and charts in Microsoft Excel and prepare management slides in Microsoft PowerPoint. No prior strategy qualification, finance specialism, market research expertise, or experience with Balanced Scorecard software is required. Complete beginners to strategic planning should expect guided templates and worked examples before applying each method.

Training methodology

The five-day programme uses instructor-led explanation to introduce each planning method, followed immediately by worked examples and application workshops. Participants analyse a realistic business case and, where appropriate, apply templates to their own department or function. Small groups test assumptions, compare strategic options, and challenge proposed objectives and measures using evidence-based questions. The instructor provides feedback on strategy maps, KPI definitions, initiative scoring, and roadmap logic. The final day is an application-planning workshop in which participants complete and present a concise strategic planning pack for stakeholder review.

Frequently asked questions

You should have experience managing a team, project, service, or functional area and understand how your organisation sets priorities and tracks performance. You do not need prior formal training in strategy, finance, consulting, or Balanced Scorecard methods.

A laptop is recommended for live online delivery and useful in classroom workshops if you want to adapt the templates to your own work area. Exercises use Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and collaborative whiteboarding tools; no specialist strategy software licence is required.

It is best suited to managers responsible for departmental, functional, business-unit, programme, or service planning. It is especially valuable for managers preparing for annual planning, a new operating plan, a transformation initiative, or a senior management role.

This course focuses on the practical management process of building and delivering a plan: analysis, priorities, objectives, KPIs, initiatives, risks, and governance. It does not concentrate on corporate-level mergers, advanced competitive economics, or board-level portfolio strategy.

The templates can be used to structure planning workshops, clarify priorities with stakeholders, redesign KPI packs, or prepare a departmental plan for approval. Participants are encouraged to use a current business challenge so the final deliverable can be refined after the course.

You leave with a strategic planning pack containing a situational analysis, stakeholder map, strategy map, KPI register, prioritised initiatives, risk register, governance model, and 90-day roadmap. You also receive reusable planning templates and a certificate of completion.
