Course overview

Healthcare supply chains must maintain product availability without tying up scarce clinical budgets in excess stock. Procurement and supply chain teams face volatile demand, supplier shortages, backorders, product substitutions, implant traceability requirements, cold-chain obligations and pressure to reduce variation across sites. This course helps participants make defensible supply decisions that protect patient care while improving cost, inventory and supplier performance.

Participants examine the end-to-end healthcare supply chain, from clinical demand signals and item-master governance to sourcing, contracting, replenishment, distribution, recall management and performance reporting. They learn to segment medical and non-medical categories, calculate safety stock and reorder points, assess supplier risk, apply total cost of ownership, manage purchase-to-pay controls and use KPIs such as fill rate, stockout rate, inventory turns, contract compliance and purchase price variance. Sessions also address GS1 identification standards, UDI-linked traceability, temperature-sensitive products and physician preference items.

Instructor-led teaching is combined with healthcare cases, spreadsheet-based inventory calculations, supplier-risk workshops and group decision exercises. Participants work through a simulated hospital supply chain scenario involving a critical product shortage, competing clinical requirements and constrained budget. Requirements and prerequisites

Training methodology

The programme uses instructor-led briefings to establish healthcare supply chain methods, followed by guided application in realistic hospital and health-system scenarios. Participants calculate inventory parameters in Microsoft Excel, interpret supplier-performance data, assess a disruption affecting critical clinical products and debate product-standardisation decisions with simulated clinical stakeholders. Small-group workshops produce risk scorecards, KPI definitions and improvement actions. Each participant completes an end-of-course application plan for a live supply chain issue, supported by facilitator feedback and peer challenge.

Frequently asked questions

You should already understand basic purchasing or inventory terms such as supplier, purchase order, lead time and stock level. Experience in a hospital, clinic, pharmacy, medical distributor or healthcare procurement function is strongly recommended, but advanced analytics expertise is not required.

A laptop with Microsoft Excel is recommended because participants complete inventory and KPI exercises using supplied templates. You do not need access to SAP S/4HANA, GHX, Power BI or your employer's ERP system during the course.
