Course overview
Sustainability and corporate social responsibility responsibilities now affect operational decisions, supplier selection, risk reporting, workforce practices and customer trust. Professionals are frequently asked to contribute to ESG disclosures, emissions-reduction plans or community-impact programmes without a shared definition of materiality, credible data or accountable governance. This course gives participants a practical foundation for turning broad sustainability commitments into prioritised, measurable business actions that can withstand internal challenge and external scrutiny.
Participants examine the environmental, social and governance dimensions of CSR; major reporting and disclosure frameworks; stakeholder expectations; climate and carbon fundamentals; responsible procurement; human rights due diligence; and sustainability governance. They learn to conduct a materiality assessment, map stakeholders, define sustainability KPIs, build a simple emissions inventory, assess supplier risks and develop a CSR action plan. The emphasis is on selecting proportionate methods and evidence for an organisation's sector, size and operating context.
Instructor-led briefings are combined with worked examples, group analysis and a running business case. Participants use templates for stakeholder mapping, materiality scoring, carbon-data collection, KPI design and action planning. By the end of the week, each participant produces a practical Sustainability and CSR Action Pack: a materiality matrix, stakeholder engagement outline, baseline KPI set, priority risk register and 90-day implementation plan that can be adapted for use in their own organisation.
The course is suited to professionals who support sustainability activity from HSE, operations, procurement, HR, quality, communications, compliance or corporate affairs roles. It is particularly valuable for organisations establishing their first structured CSR programme or seeking to replace isolated initiatives with governed, evidence-based priorities.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain ESG, CSR and sustainability concepts using recognised business, environmental and social impact terminology
- Conduct a stakeholder mapping exercise using influence, interest and impact criteria
- Complete a double-materiality assessment using a scored issue register and prioritisation matrix
- Calculate a basic organisational greenhouse-gas inventory using the GHG Protocol Scope 1, 2 and 3 categories
- Define sustainability KPIs with baselines, owners, data sources, targets and reporting frequency
- Assess supplier sustainability risks using environmental, labour, ethics and traceability evaluation criteria
- Draft a CSR governance structure with executive sponsorship, accountability roles and escalation routes
- Produce a 90-day Sustainability and CSR Action Pack for a defined business unit or organisation

- HSE Managers and Officers — who must connect environmental performance data with wider business sustainability priorities
- Procurement and Supply Chain Managers — who assess supplier practices, responsible sourcing risks and tender requirements
- CSR, Corporate Affairs and Communications Professionals — who need evidence-based claims and defensible stakeholder messaging
- HR and People Managers — who support social-impact, workforce wellbeing, inclusion and human-rights commitments
- Operations, Quality and Compliance Managers — who translate policy commitments into controlled processes, metrics and action plans
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have general workplace experience and a basic understanding of how their organisation operates, including its products or services, key suppliers, sites or departments and normal reporting lines. Familiarity with simple spreadsheet tasks in Microsoft Excel, such as entering data, using basic formulas and sorting tables, is helpful because exercises use KPI and emissions-data templates. No prior sustainability qualification, carbon-accounting experience, GRI reporting knowledge or specialist environmental science background is required. Complete beginners should expect to work with practical examples and may benefit from reviewing their organisation's published sustainability, HSE or annual report beforehand.
Training methodology
The programme uses instructor-led concept sessions followed by applied work on a continuing business case involving a multi-site organisation and its supply chain. Participants interpret sustainability claims, score material issues, map stakeholders, classify emissions data and test supplier-risk scenarios in small groups. The instructor demonstrates templates aligned to the GHG Protocol, GRI Standards and SASB Standards, then provides feedback on participant outputs. Each day closes with a practical artefact, culminating in an individual implementation plan tailored to the participant's business context.
