Course overview

Construction projects are increasingly judged on more than programme, cost and technical quality. Clients, lenders, regulators and communities expect credible evidence of carbon reduction, responsible sourcing, waste control, worker welfare, local benefit and transparent stakeholder engagement. Project teams must convert broad ESG and CSR commitments into requirements that can be designed, procured, measured and defended through the project lifecycle. Without a structured approach, sustainability targets become late-stage reporting exercises, suppliers make unverified claims, and community or environmental concerns escalate into delays, disputes and reputational risk.

This course equips participants to embed sustainability and corporate social responsibility into construction project governance, design decisions, procurement packages, site controls and close-out reporting. Participants work with materiality assessments, stakeholder maps, embodied-carbon baselines, social-value plans, supplier prequalification criteria, sustainability KPIs and audit evidence registers. They learn how to apply recognised frameworks including LEED v4.1, BREEAM, Envision and One Click LCA while distinguishing between certification requirements, contractual obligations and project-specific performance targets.

Delivered through instructor-led workshops, construction case studies and team-based planning exercises, the programme focuses on decisions participants must make at project level. Delegates develop a Sustainability and CSR Project Implementation Plan for a realistic construction scheme, including objectives, roles, KPI definitions, data sources, procurement controls, stakeholder actions and reporting cadence. This deliverable can be adapted for use on a live capital project or incorporated into a tender, project execution plan or contractor management system.

The course is suited to experienced construction, HSE, sustainability, commercial and client-side professionals who need to lead or challenge sustainability and CSR delivery across complex projects.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have working experience of construction project delivery, design coordination, HSE management, procurement, commercial management or client-side project governance. Familiarity with a project lifecycle, tender documentation, subcontractor management and basic environmental concepts such as waste, energy, emissions and permits is assumed. Participants should be comfortable reviewing spreadsheets and project reports; basic Excel use is helpful for KPI exercises. Prior use of LEED, BREEAM, Envision or lifecycle-assessment software is not required, and no specialist environmental science qualification is needed. The course does not teach construction management fundamentals.

Training methodology

The programme combines focused instructor-led briefings with construction-project case analysis, document reviews and facilitated design sessions. Participants test sustainability clauses against sample tender packages, interpret lifecycle-carbon outputs, assess supplier evidence and build KPI registers using realistic project data. Small groups work through competing cost, programme, compliance and community considerations rather than treating sustainability as a standalone topic. Each day closes with an applied exercise, and the final day is used to refine an individual Sustainability and CSR Project Implementation Plan with peer and instructor feedback.

Workshop: Participants complete a materiality matrix and governance map for a mixed-use construction project, producing a prioritised issue register.

Day 2: Low-carbon and resource-responsible project decisions

  • Design interventions for concrete, steel, façade and fit-out impacts
  • Circular-economy principles for reuse, recovery and design for disassembly

Workshop: Teams review a lifecycle-carbon dashboard and produce a ranked carbon-reduction options schedule with assumptions and trade-offs.

Day 3: Responsible procurement and supply-chain controls

  • Responsible sourcing evidence, chain-of-custody and product declarations
  • Bid evaluation scorecards for carbon, social value and supplier capability

Workshop: Participants draft a tender sustainability evaluation matrix and supplier evidence checklist for a major works package.

Day 4: Social value, workforce welfare and community relations

  • Stakeholder identification, influence-interest mapping and engagement planning
  • Community impact assessment for traffic, noise, access and local amenity
  • Grievance mechanisms, complaint logs and response-time commitments
  • Social-value outcomes for local employment, apprenticeships and SME spend

No prior certification or software experience is required. The course explains how project teams use LEED v4.1, BREEAM, Envision and One Click LCA outputs to make decisions, rather than training participants as certification assessors or LCA modellers.

A laptop is strongly recommended for reviewing templates, completing KPI and supplier-evaluation exercises, and adapting the implementation-plan workbook. All exercises can be completed with standard spreadsheet and document-editing software; licences for specialist tools are not required.

Yes. Contractors gain practical controls for site delivery, subcontractor management, workforce welfare and evidence collection, while client-side participants learn how to specify and assure those requirements. Mixed cohorts also help participants understand where responsibilities should sit contractually.
